The volunteer added: “The kids love it and have made great progress and gained confidence because of Home-Start.” Sometimes a small amount of practical, tailored support opens the door to something a family could not safely or affordably do alone.

Home-Start Edinburgh found a volunteer who could accompany the family and provided help with the cost of the sessions. In the water, the parent supports one child while the volunteer supports the other.

Two children, one parent and a swimming goal made possible. A parent of twins wanted the children to gain confidence in the water before starting school. However, safely supporting two young children in a swimming pool alone was a real barrier.

A volunteer was delighted to receive a certificate recognising their contribution. Participants also shared constructive feedback on making future courses more accessible for people who experience challenges with reading and writing.

Nine participants successfully completed the latest Recovery Coaching Scotland CIC Self-Coaching programme. For one participant, it was the first thing they had ever completed. Another described it as the best training they had ever done.

At first, the participant was quiet and hesitant. Through regular attendance, peer support and new friendships, confidence began to grow. Today, the participant helps welcome newcomers, particularly people who may be feeling nervous or isolated themselves.

Despite living in Edinburgh for many years, changes in family circumstances meant there were times when the participant went for long periods without speaking to anyone in Polish.

Since then, the member has shared creative work at public events, including the GCP summer showcase and Coffeehouse gigs, and performed on the Community Fringe Stage on Edinburgh’s High Street. Even better, the member is now encouraging others to get involved too.

Through writing and art groups, the member began building confidence, expressing ideas and forming stronger relationships. The member contributed poetry and artwork to the Grassmarket Voice publication and became involved in its editing and production.

The prolonged uncertainty, advocacy and caring responsibilities had a significant impact on the parent’s own mental health. Through the Tailor Ed Foundation, the parent accessed dedicated mental health support and a confidential space to speak openly, without judgement.
