I've been watching something happen in Canadian politics that honestly should concern all of us, no matter who we vote for. The Conservative movement keeps turning up the
heat on populist rhetoric that attacks the very institutions democracy depends on.
Judges are painted as enemies when rulings don't go their way. Journalists are dismissed as corrupt if reporting is critical, Public institutions are treated like villains instead of imperfect systems
meant to serve Canadians. Even the rule of law gets framed as some kind of political obstacle.
And before someone says it, no, this isn't about never criticizing institutions, Criticism matters. Accountability matters.

But there's a difference between criticism and systematically convincing people that they can't trust anything except the politician standing in front of them.
That's where this starts feeling less like healthy democratic debate and more like the Trump playbook.
If people stop trusting courts, journalists, elections, experts, and institutions altogether, what fills the vacuum? Usually, anger. Conspiracies. Strongman politics. Canada has always had disagreements. Big ones.
But we've generally shared a belief that our institutions matter, even when they frustrate us.
Watching that trust deliberately chipped away for political gain is honestly hard to watch.
