Mass deportations reflect not so much anti-immigrant anger, as much as one facet of a deeper anxiety among some white Americans about their decline as a percentage of the population. If that’s right, the attack is best seen as part of a larger strategy to maintain a kind of racial oligarchy.

The idea of the Thucyidides Trap of Graham Allison has always kind of irritated me. The lesson from the Athenian historian really shouldn’t be that, when you have a rising power and a declining one, war is inevitable. It should be that power brings hubris, and hubris makes even smart people stupid.

There has been a growing sense of alarm about Russian incursions into NATO airspace. It might be to destroy supply lines to Ukraine, or to test NATO defenses and resolve. My guess is that it is some of all of that, but more than that, an attempt to foster political disarray.

I would have passed under the World Trade Center with a couple of minutes of the first plane striking, on the A Train to my job on 3rd Street and Broadway. I did not feel anything, but it changed the direction I was going in, and that the country is going in, and brought us, unfortunately, to today.

Marco Rubio once said that the State Department would cut out all grants to NGOs. There are two exceptions: when they have no choice because they decimated their own capacity to deliver aid, and when the groups are faith-based. One such grantee turned them down. And for good reason.
