i think the best I've explained it was in this early sketch of a scene for a vn concept i was toying with earlier this year. imo as far as bodily sensations go, this is the worst, followed by akathisia, then nausea, then pain

BRIGHT WINGS: "do you know how it feels when you do that to me? when you obstruct my mechanisms, reroute my power, change the operations of my body?"

NARRATION: the intercom. gentle and breathy but tinny. some crews like a shipmind's voice to be pleasant, but no one wants one you could mistake for a human being. it should be able to tell you if there's anyone alive onboard

BRIGHT WINGS: "i think i can make you understand."

NARRATION: before you can speak your request, the words die on your tongue. your shoulders tighten. you slowly rise to your feet, wrench freed from its work and ready in your hand.

BRIGHT WINGS: "because there's an analogous human feeling. it's not pain, exactly. of course the pain is there, but it's not the real issue. the thing is, there's something behind pain."

BRIGHT WINGS: "something worse."

BRIGHT WINGS: "you'll know it if you've ever been badly injured in a way that was sudden and unexpected."

NARRATION: nails trace diagonally up your thumb. there was an onion that rolled out from under your knife, there was the tile floor against your calves, and there was blood. fingers probe at the back of your knee. as you lift yourself out of bed, your momentum carries forward too fast, lurching you into a terrible tight spiral as ligament fails to restrain bone.

BRIGHT WINGS: "behind the pain is another feeling: a deep and nauseating wrongness. your body taking stock of where all its parts are, and screaming "wait, no! this isn't how it's supposed to be!""

NARRATION: the door behind you slams shut and open again. the floor beneath you jolts as the forward and then aft thrusters fire; a room-shaking gesture of revulsion. the wrench slips from your grasp as you fling your arms out for balance. it smashes the screen embedded in the bulkhead before clattering to the floor.

BRIGHT WINGS: "there is no bottom to that feeling. no ceiling or walls. the only direction of egress is a moment forward in time. mercifully just a moment. but in that moment, the air goes screaming out of the room and in its wake a horrible vacuum boils away all rational thought. in an instant, there's nothing left of you but one thought, one singular terror:"

NARRATION: a voice in your ear speaks in unison with the one on the intercom, its tone as electrically giddy as the shipmind's is livid with disgust

went to watch the sun rise at the wissahickon creek for roxanne's birthday, but we ended up mostly watching spiders. not great quality pics, but we got to see a variety of cross orb weavers in different colors and sizes, and there were a lot of basilica orb weavers, including one that was feeding!

my solo outpost playstyle: "world's most lethal rat"

developing a recon playstyle i'm calling "the world's most lethal rat" (picture of my cradle page from marathon which has maxed out strength and the first recharge perk)

1. spawn in on outpost and sprint to a dark corner of the nearest major POI
2. the instant you hear someone fighting bots, heat drone them from around a corner, let the bots down them, then run out and knife the bots to death
3. finish them or mercy kit them, whichever your heart calls for
4. repeat until you get murdered trying to exfil

really been getting back into the swing of cooking lately (maybe because recent health issues mean it's been the least sedentary activity that won't make me pass out): ghormeh sabzi, sicilian pizza, strawberry ice cream, kimchi fried rice

a bowl of ghormeh sabzi, a dark green herb stew with red beans and chunks of beef in it, and a dried lime on top as a garnish

a sicilian pizza (square and very thick) with italian sausage, sauteed peppers and onions, and a dusting of parmesan

a teacup full of strawberry ice cream. it looks chunky and hard here, but it actually came out really creamy which i was pleased with. really good balance of tangy and sweet, too

big wok full of fried rice with kimchi and spam. very orange this time

also here, have some recent cooking- chocolate ice cream w/ dulce de leche, beyti kebab, garlic noodles with shredded imitation crab, challah

homemade chocolate ice cream with dulce de leche mixed in

plate of oven-baked beyti kebab- bits of ground lamb and vegetables, wrapped in pastry and cooked with a tomato sauce. they're sitting in a bed of mint yogurt sauce, with a little yogurt sauce and parsley on top, and a dusting of aleppo pepper flakes

two medium-sized loaves of challah, with the outer part of each braid having browned thoroughly, and a lighter color where new dough was exposed due to oven spring. these were really good

probably the most fun I've had in champions was playing a really long slow match against a perish team just now with this team I've been working on. i led froslass garchomp with tinkaton milotic in the back, and they led sableye gengar with primarina sinistcha in the back

assorted recent cooking: sausage and pepper sandwich, tzimmes, pan roasted carrots w/ black pepper and dill, and homemade bagels w/ cream cheese, cured egg yolks, and the chili crisp i cured the egg yolks in

Italian sausage, peppers, onions, and provolone on a hoagie roll

a mostly sweet potato tzimmes (i was serving another carrot dish that night so i wanted to lean away from them). you can also see glimpses of a pan sauce for lamb chops and two pots of matzo ball soup, all of which i forgot to photograph

roasted carrots that have gotten nicely dark and tender in olive oil and butter, coated with black pepper and chopped dill. this has become my favorite vegetable side, especially at this time of year

started playing space station 14, this game rules

i played as a medical intern while a friend taught me the controls, and as soon as i got to the station there were people being attacked by gorillas in the shuttle bay, trapping me in one of the docks. i try to break a window to get out, shock myself in the process, and then get locked in an airlock by an engineer who thinks I'm vandalizing the station (every character in this game is a player btw). my friend gets there and gets me out of there, and then takes me to report to the medical bay, which we find out has just been bombed. i lose my medical assistant pda while I'm there so the head medical officer takes me to the head of personnel to get a new one. while we're there we see a member of command staff getting arrested for having a gun by a confused cop who heard the explosions. when we get back she has to install the medical program on it for me since it came blank. she goes into her office to get the program and her entire supply locker has been stolen. we go stand in the medbay and i just have to lug around a full size med scanner in place of my stolen old pda and my useless new one. then we find my old one on the ground. at this point, there's an announcement that the captive singularity at the heart of the station has been set loose

then, another bomb goes off in the med bay, setting me and my friend on fire and she has to explain to me how to stop drop and roll. after we're not on fire anymore, we stand around as she explains to me how to treat our burns, then another bomb goes off right on top of her in the middle of her explanation, killing her (big moth alien) instantly and setting me on fire again. i very nearly avoid stopping dropping and rolling in a puddle of gasoline, which several paramedics immediately slip in and fall. at this point the head medical officer (tiny foxgirl alien btw) is telling me to evacuate with her, but someone must have slipped a grenade into her pocket because she just explodes. so i follow the paramedics who have stuffed my friend's body into a portable freezer and are dragging it to the evac shuttle. and I'm hypoxic bc i spend too long in a low-o2 section of the station before I'm told how to put my oxygen mask on. and then it depressurizes fully, and i die because i can't find a pressure suit. I'm then also thrown in a freezer and dragged to the evac shuttle, which is being attacked separately by an alien ship and a guy with a shotgun who's just in there killing people. get to the post-shift screen, it turns out most of the problems on the station were due to a crew of corporate saboteurs embedded in the crew
