By the way, they just happened to elope while at a film festival in Israel. Their official wedding was in New York. But apparently that makes them supporters of Israel's policies.
Excerpt from Daphna Kastner's Wikipedia page:

"She and Harvey Keitel secretly married in Jerusalem, while attending the Haifa International Film Festival. In October 2001, they had their official ceremony at the Manhattan home of Keitel's friend, Ian Eckersley. They have a son."

Yes -- a description of Washington's Cruisers is here:
During the Revolutionary War, George Washington outfitted his squadron of six schooners with this flag, commissioned at his own expense in the fall of 1775, hence the flag's name, "Washington's Cruisers". Knowing they were up against a great military force they believed they were sustained by a higher power, thus their "APPEAL TO HEAVEN".

This pine tree became a symbol of American resistance and independence and continues to hold this meaning today.

Again, I don't think we lose anything by giving a couple days to find out if it is only up for the 250th based on the fact that this flag was literally flown by George Washington's own navy schooners. I'm not advocating for supporting them, just confirming that's what is happening before boycotting.

FYI, #Chicago, I'm seeing this post starting to go viral. IMO, unless this flag is kept up indefinitely, there's a real chance we'd be participating in a false moral panic. Please try not to jump to conclusions - see what I've elaborated on here, and that it might be an honest misunderstanding.

You should leave room *this weekend* for the possibility that this is historically a Revolutionary War Naval flag and they just don't know the history of it. Apparently 2 days ago, it was this version of it:

Amazing to see the movie itself advertised on The Hollywood Reporter's article about why journalism gets on board with a movie like this.
Excerpt from the article, then showing an advertisement directly below for "Michael" to get tickets.

"I think clearly some of the press is sucking up to the Jackson machine because: A, the estate and the fan base has always ensured that the price of criticizing Michael is years of invective and smears and what have you. And B, there’s a ton of money to be made by any kind of association with the Jackson IP. If you can get on board and be part of the success of this movie, then that’s going to be good for you.

So a lot of people, I think, will kind of swallow any misgivings they may have and just sort of say, 'Oh well, it’s a great jukebox movie' and just completely ignore the fact that this guy was worse than Jeffrey Epstein."

They killed a 37 year old white male nurse who was a citizen and had no criminal background. www.startribune.com/ice-raids-mi...
From The Minnesota Star Tribune on Saturday, January 24, 2026:

Sources identify man shot as Alex Jeffrey Pretti of south Minneapolis

The man fatally shot by federal officers in Minneapolis this morning has been identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

Pretti, 37, has an address listed in south Minneapolis.

At a news conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the man who was shot was a 37-year-old white man with no serious criminal history and a record that showed some parking tickets. Law enforcement sources said Saturday their records show Pretti had no serious criminal history.

O'Hara said the man was a “lawful gun owner” with a permit. Records show that Pretti attended the University of Minnesota. State records show Pretti was issued a nursing license in 2021, and it remains active through March 2026.

Then in the afternoon, 5-year-old Liam Ramos was taken with his father while in their driveway after just arriving home from his preschool classroom. School officials say the child was used as bait to knock on the door and ask to be let in, letting officers see if anyone else was home.

"Why detain a 5-year-old? You can't tell me that this child is going to be classified as a violent criminal," said superintendent Zena Stenvik.

Two weeks ago, a 10-year-old student in fourth grade was taken by ICE agents on her way to elementary school with her mother. During the arrest, the child called her father on the phone to tell her that ICE agents were bringing her to school. The father then came to the school to find out both his daughter and wife had been taken.

Know your rights if stopped by police in D.C.

* Ask: “Am I free to leave?” and “Am I under arrest?”

 * If police stop you, they might ask if they can search you. You do not have to give the officers permission to conduct a frisk or a search, though in some circumstances they can do so anyway. Telling police that you do not consent to a search is a good way to protect your rights to the greatest extent possible.

* You do not have to answer questions that police ask you, except to give your name and address if asked in some situations.

* If you are arrested, you should tell the police that you are invoking your right to remain silent (say so explicitly) and that you want to speak with a lawyer. From there, you should not answer any other questions, except your name and address if asked.

* If you are detained by ICE or Border Patrol, you have the right to hire a lawyer, but the government does not have to provide one for you. Ask for a list of free or low-cost alternatives.

* It can be dangerous for people to argue about police misconduct in the street, especially for Black and Brown people. Keep yourself safe and file a complaint later.

Hey Bluesky! I run an email group in the run up to the election with actions you can take and info on down ballot races you should pay attention to, and it's starting this week. It's also a hype machine! If you or anyone you know is interested in receiving it, reply/DM me and I'll make it happen.
Excerpt from 2020 Day 90 email:
Request your ballot at least 15 days before the return deadline. Most states require ballots to be received, not just postmarked, by Election Day.
Return your ballot at least seven (7) days before that deadline.
If at all possible, drop off your ballot at a secure drop box, likely at a local clerk's office, rather than use the postal service this year to return it (except perhaps in Pennsylvania, where the GOP is currently suing to drop your ballot at any location other than the Post Office).
Fill out your ballot very carefully, double checking it yourself and asking someone else to do the same for you if possible. Ballots are thrown out for a variety of reasons, sometimes because they are missing a signature on an envelope or your name or address has slight differences from whatever is listed on your registration. Check and double check. Ballots actually have the highest risk of being rejected in New York state, so plan accordingly.
☹️ No more room!Excerpt from 2018 Day 25 email:
Send postcard reminders to Democrats across the country. Also called "postcarding," you can join a local group or organization to hand-write postcards prompting people to vote. You're given specific talking points from a campaign so you don't have to think up what to say on your own. Note that you'll need to buy the postcards and stamps yourself unless the candidate you're working with says otherwise. Postcard stamps are now 35 cents each. To get started, visit Vote Forward, NeedToVote, or PostcardsToVoters.org.
Talk to friends, family, and post on social media. If you're comfortable with it, write and talk about your support for specific candidates. If you're not comfortable with public partisanship, post reminders on how and when to vote for your friends and family and ask them for their voting plan (i.e. when, where, and how they will vote). Commit to vote and ask others to do too.
Get your employer to offer time off to vote.
☹️ No more room!Excerpt from 2020 Day 67 email:
Are you multilingual? Any chance you speak both Spanish and English? You're needed! Next Tuesday, September 1, 6 PM to 7 PM, is a Spanish-language phonebank event with Sister District.

Are you an opera fan? Field Team 6 is hosting a voter registration phonebanking event with a performance by divas tomorrow, Saturday, August 29, from 6 PM to 7 PM PDT.

Want to fight voter suppression? Join Swing Left to make calls to disenfranchised voters in Southern swing states and help with registration, mail-in ballots, and early voting questions on Sundays, 1 PM to 3:30 PM PDT, leading up to the election. This is perfect if you don't want to try to persuade anyone to vote for someone specific, need more advance notice to put an event in your schedule, and you want to add something more regular into your calendar.

Tonight I donated to Higher Heights For America, which provides electoral and financial support to black women running for office...

Let's be clear: Netanyahu was at the forefront of the movement and spoke at multiple rallies with groups calling for "Death to Rabin" just before pro-peace Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin *was assassinated.* He should never get to speak about propriety when it comes to assassination and democracy.
Excerpt from Guardian article on the Rabin assassination:

The then leader of the opposition, Benjamin Netanyahu, was the star speaker at two now infamous demonstrations, where the crowd's slogans included "Death to Rabin". In July 1995, Netanyahu walked at the head of a mock funeral procession featuring a fake black coffin.

Title VI can only be enforced by the federal agency providing the assistance (Department of Education in this instance) or by the Department of Justice if it is referred for legal action, not Congress. There is no reason to believe the colleges would be in jeopardy. www.justice.gov/crt/fcs/Titl...
Portion of Title VI Overview from Department of Justice webpage:
If a recipient of federal assistance is found to have discriminated and voluntary compliance cannot be achieved, the federal agency providing the assistance should either initiate fund termination proceedings or refer the matter to the Department of Justice for appropriate legal action. Aggrieved individuals may file administrative complaints with the federal agency that provides funds to a recipient, or the individuals may file suit for appropriate relief in federal court. Title VI itself prohibits intentional discrimination. However, most funding agencies have regulations implementing Title VI that prohibit recipient practices that have the effect of discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin.

I've always appreciated simplicity and symbolism behind the City of Chicago flag, for similar reasons.
Infographic image of the Chicago flag with description of each of its elements via Encyclopedia Britannica.

The flag consists of two light blue stripes cutting across a white background to create three white stripes alternating with the blue. The middle white band, which is thicker than the top and bottom, contains four red six-pointed stars.

The white and blue areas represent the city’s physical geography. The three white bands stand for the north, west and south sides of the city, while the blue stripes are symbolic of the city’s important bodies of water. The top blue band represents Lake Michigan and the north branch of the Chicago River. The bottom band represents the south branch of the Chicago River.

Each star stands for an event in Chicago’s history. From left to right, they represent the following:

Fort Dearborn
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871
The World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893
The Century of Progress Exposition of 1933-34

Bluesky post by @josie.zone, named Bell Jar Binks with the trans flag, who in their bio calls themselves a "Jewish Trans anarchist":
An image of a bottle of Manischewitz wine that sections off portions like each area is where discussion is happening while the wine is being drunk. The first says, "How about that genocide, huh?" The second says, "We gotta quit Judaism." The third says, "We gotta study more anarchism." The fourth and bottom portion says, "Let's invent Judeoanarchy." The text above the image reads: "The only acceptable course of conversation at Passover this year."

FYI -- if you have cinnamon purchased from these brands/stores, throw it out!
Paragraph in Washington Post article about lead levels in ground cinnamon spice brands:
The FDA is advising people to throw away six brands of ground cinnamon under the names La Fiesta, Marcum, MK, Swad, Supreme Tradition and El Chilar. The products are sold at local and national retailers, including Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Patel Brothers and Save A Lot. The FDA has asked the companies to issue voluntary recalls.

OMG.
Jared Kushner will be presented the ADL Abraham Accords Champion Award for his work negotiating the Abraham Accords, which the organization has credited with helping in the efforts to secure the release of hostages in Gaza. Kushner’s selection as a recipient of the award has raised eyebrows among more progressive Jewish groups due to his ties to former President Donald Trump.

There are several paragraphs about it in the original article.
In particular, several recent studies have documented large errors in online opt-in surveys due to the presence of so-called “bogus respondents.” These respondents do not answer questions sincerely; instead, they attempt to complete surveys with as little effort as possible to earn money or other rewards.

Studies have shown that bogus respondents can cause opt-in surveys to overestimate rare attitudes and behaviors, such as ingesting bleach to protect against COVID-19, belief in conspiracies like Pizzagate or support for political violence.

At Pew Research Center, we’ve found that this type of overreporting tends to be especially concentrated in estimates for adults under 30, as well as Hispanic adults. Bogus respondents may be identifying this way in order to bypass screening questions that might otherwise prevent them from receiving a reward, though the precise reasons are difficult to pin down. Whatever the underlying cause, the result can be unreliable estimates for those groups.
