Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 07/10/2026My account shows nothing at all. Evidently my interests are of no consequence. Or so varied that their algorithms cannot track me. 131
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Do share how to access this. Also, I didn't know you had railway interests. Other than studying timetables. 160
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Build data centres under the North Sea. Beside the wind farms. Power, cooling, land use and eyesore issues solved at a stroke. 100
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 06/10/2026The Doomwatch episode involved a modified bacteria that eats plastic. It got loose on a plane and almost crashed it. You may be thinking of Survivors. A series where a virus killed most of the world population. 000
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Chicken wire over everything. Sorted. Ukraine has entire roads covered. 000
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Err, did the Ordnance Survey start during the Napoleonic wars? 110
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 06/10/2026You couldn't protect Westminster for that much, let alone Britannia. Iron Dome was designed for ballistic missile attack. It would struggle gainst massed drones or hypersonic missiles. It ignores objects that will impact unpopulated places. Sheep may safely graze? 000
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Oh to have had a couple of minutes alone to snaffle a few of those. 110
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 04/10/2026In the UK we call it 2-stroke. In your case that may be literally your fate. 110
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 04/10/2026As a comparison, a complete Dyson sphere is in the billion earths range. 010
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Waking up now. Surface area of a cylinder is 2*pi*r*h. 2*pi*93M*1M = approx 600 trillion square miles. Earth surface = 4*pi*r^2. Approx 195 million square miles. So I was roughly right with 3 million earths. 110
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 04/10/2026There are two major oceans at opposite sides to balance the ring somewhat. I think by pumping water somehow. One of these has islands laid out like full size maps of Earth, Mars, the Kzin homeworld and some other planets. 010
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 04/10/2026It's the warp capable tardigeade from Star Trek Discovery. 020
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I think the numbers are somewhere in the books. From memory, a Ringworld is about 3 million earth surfaces but I can't remember if that includes oceans and my brain isn't in a good spot to recalculate right now. 020
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Ringworld is, as you say, 1AU in radius. It is a million miles wide with walls 1000 miles high to retain the atmosphere. It spins fast enough to replicate 1G at the surface. By day, the distant ring would be invisible but at night a thin line (called the arch) is visible higher up in the sky. 200
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 03/10/2026The British had the Boulton Paul Defiant in WW2. A fighter with a turret behind the pilot. Meant to approach enemy bombers from below. Sadly was almost useless against fighters. Bolton Paul were furniture makers. I guess they didn't design the engine and weapons. 320
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Book2 2 if the Rama series ups the action. The last two were an anticIimax for me, with the final being a real cop out. Get into Ringworld, it's sequels and then the Fleet of Worlds series. They are epic stories. 000
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Say the people who allow a washing machine in their bathroom. 000
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Can I get all my 3D printing software on it? I have printers from Bambu, Elegoo, Prusa plus various design stuff like 3D Builder. I now have a decent Win 11 machine but my 12 year old Dell can't be upgraded to 11. 200
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 29/09/20261. Robots. 2. A chute in every home that conveys all the trash to sorters and then to mulchers or big 3D printers to recycle everything. Where do you think all of Picard's teacups go? 011
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 28/09/2026If you watched the TV series Jam and Jerusalem, you'll have seen this discussed. Also rimming, which of course is rubbing a finger round the rim of a wine glass to make a sound. 010
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Our gardener has just fixed the fence panel that blew down in February. So that's a plus. 010
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 21/09/2026In the 1980s, Streatham was being gentrified. They pronounced it St Reatham. 000
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 19/09/2026The Ringworld RPG is close but with lots of aliens. Despite the vast world, the game is generally localised. With few internal perils, I can't see where the conflicts arise in Rama. Now Rama 2 et seq... 100
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 19/09/2026The World Perfumed Darts Championship is not to be sniffed at. 110
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Exciting development. This time next year, you'll be a millionaire! 030
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Did you receive any other mail between those dates? We often go a few days with no delivery and the posties tell us it's due to staffing levels. They have less than half the people compared to a few years ago. We've never gone 10 days without any post. 100
Andrew Holmes @evenpickier.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Congratulations. Our leeks never got fatter than pencils. Potatoes did well. 110
