I had the privilege of joining STEMSEAS this September and joining as part of their science team to learn how science is done aboard ships!

I went to Oakes Quarry Park in Ohio, it had some pretty interesting rocks! It was also full of fossils. I wanna go here again someday.
FOSSIL CORAL REEF

Coral reefs exposed in the quarry are among the oldest Silurian fossil reef n the United States. These reefs formed during an important transitiona tihe in the history of reefs, when corals were becoming more important as reef framebuilders. The coral-stromatoporoid reef that you can visit in the quarry is only a few meters in diameter but shows the diversity of reef-building, reef-dwelling and reef-associated organisms living on the sea floor during deposition of the Brassfield Limestone.
The core of the patch reef is exposed in the quarry and is characterized by large mound-shaped corals and stromatoporoids.

I got to revisit one of my favorite outcrops! This giant wall of slickensides was shown to me by my professor when we came here a few months ago for a field course!

Figuring out where to go for a 4-year college is a surprisingly difficult decision. There’s W&M, OSU, Cork Ireland, JMU, and many others that are very appealing to me. Scholarships and financial aid too. That’s tricky to figure out.

🚨NEW STUDY DROP🚨 New euarthropod is named Oreinorema bergstroemi, from early Cambrian Chengjiang biota. This thing looks like a radiodont from afar, but key features (like the mouthparts) place it outside of the group. It's a transitional form! 🎨: Xiaodong Wang

Putting slides together to teach children about our state’s fossils and realizing I don’t need to teach them every single thing, but there’s so much cool stuff to learn. How do professors know what to include and what to not include? Time to develop tools of the trade I guess.

no alt-text, so here it is because we need to pay fucking attention to this threat to murder trans people and everyone who supports trans people
section of an executive order dated May 2026: In addition to cartels and Islamist terror groups, our national CT activities will also prioritize the rapid identification and neutralization of violent secular political groups whose ideology is anti-American, radically pro-transgender, and anarchist. We will use all the tools constitutionally available to us to map them at home, identify their membership, map their ties to international organizations like Antifa, and use law enforcement tools to cripple them operationally before they can maim or kill the innocent. We will do the same with the state sponsors of such groups and those governments undertaking lethal plots on U.S. soil or against Americans anywhere.

Our new U.S. Counterterrorism Strategy is a return to common sense and Peace through Strength. As I said after our first successful counterterrorism mission, just days after I was sworn back in office – if you hurt Americans, or are planning to hurt Americans, "We Will Find You and We Will Kill You."

450 million years ago the majority of life in the oceans had soft bodies that did not fossilize very well. Their fossilized remains often appear as blurry stains upon a rock, but now and then a specimen is found with a well preserved body part, like this strange marrelomorph.
