Hey, Bluesky. Here's some more #throwback #art: Most '70s kids were satisfied with the Six Million Dollar Man, but not me! It seems I had to have a Billion Dollar Bear. DUH, it's more expensive. You lose a lot of money in a bear market.

Thespian friends of Bluesky: who wants to put on a play, titled "PLAY", that I wrote when I was 6? 🤔 It's an enigmatic, minimalist work featuring the intriguing stage direction "CAPTAIN (in a sweaty voice)". Uh, what? #throwback #art

#throwback #art time, Bluesky! Here‘s something right outta 1976: possibly my first attempt to draw folds of drapery... and a viciously screaming eagle. Hmmmm… that eagle looks suspiciously like a different bird I drew 44 years later.

@markhamillofficial.bsky.social — have you seen Tom The Dancing Bug? This strip is very relevant to the thread here. It's all about... the gradual slide. i0.wp.com/tomdbug.wpco...

Over 100 people have downloaded my first novel this morning and it's not even 10 am. BlueSky, is it YOU doing this? If yes, I LOVE YA— keep it up!

I used to do a newsletter feature called the "Monster Mashup"— readers would vote on combos of animals and I'd make #fantasy #art of 'em! Here's the first one... the "tree-turtle". Clearly a tough nut to crack!

Hey Bluesky #art — you like etchings? Here's a chicken I made oh, probably 30 years ago. I still have the plate somewhere in my basement.

Who's heard of #MALORT? I did this 4 years ago and the memory still haunts me. Share if you too have experienced its foulness— both the pride, and the shame, of #Chicago.

Happy Thanksgiving! Bonus message in alt text.
How you look at a thing makes all the difference.

In the early 90s, when I was a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I saw an art exhibit that really changed me. It was a collection of Mughal Empire miniature paintings— each no bigger than a paperback book. One of them depicted an exotic gift given to an emperor: a rare bird from the Americas, known as a turkey.

Most of us think of a turkey as that dopey-looking animal which is supposedly too stupid to come in out of the rain. It's good to eat and that's about all. But in the painting it was something far more.

With my nose almost pressed into the protective glass, I looked through the eyes of a talented nature artist who lived half a world away and centuries ago and saw, not our silly friend the gobble-gobble, but an ancient creature of incredible beauty: its kaleidoscope of feathers, its glowing colors, the shy and gentle expression of its eye.

Yes, the world continues to be a baffling and sometimes maddening place. But I hope that, no matter what, you'll always see something wonderful in it.

Wherever you are and whatever you're having for dinner, Happy Thanksgiving.

Eva
