This book by Seth Harp was unimaginably dark, a searing and gritty investigation of the inner world of the special operations community. One of the most interesting books I’ve ever read.
Seth Harp’s book The Fort Bragg Cartel.

WHY did I buy a 100-year-old laxative tin from eBay? Because a blind WWI vet I’m currently researching for a new project was a pharmacist and patented his own laxative pill after the war, and I couldn’t pass up owning a piece of his history!

I’m at the Saratoga Book Festival this evening, but beforehand I stopped into @northshirebooks.bsky.social, saw my book on the shelf (first time that has happened), and signed a couple copies.

First time playing live since high school. Only this time I got to play with my dad and brother, I have more gray hairs, and I am not playing post-hardcore music.

At the Museum of the American Revolution, the temporary flag exhibit has a flag from the Massachusetts Militia, the same militia, though different regiment, in which my 6th great grandfather Captain Benjamin Barnes served.

From the American Journal of Nursing, April 1917.
Screenshot of a short column from the journal that reads, “During the winter campaign a body of Russian troops was engaged in a serious encounter with the Germans. At the height of the attack a pack of wolves descended on the field and began to devour the wounded. Instantly the combatants ceased fighting and fell upon the wolves, putting them to flight. The enemies then returned each to his own trenches without further molestation of the other.”

Then we went with a rod of Asclepius but the snake is constricted by bits of barbed wire from the WF. The symbol was inspired by a quote from Ellen La Motte’s book, in which she writes, “was it not all a dead-end occupation, nursing back to health men to be patched up and returned to the trenches…?”

On this 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, I recall visiting there in 2012 — the searing reality of genocide, the weight of mass death, the realization of scale that is hard to measure by numbers on paper alone. May memory serve to bolster resistance to authoritarianism anew.

Priority registration begins on Monday for SUNY Adirondack Spring 2025 semester and I am eager and excited to be teaching HIS220: History of Disability. #dishist #disability #academia #college #history
A flyer for the class. It includes a photo of disability rights protesters waving an American flag with a wheelchair user on it. The text reads: “HIS220: History of Disability
Dr. Evan P. Sullivan
Spring 2025
Register for HIS220!
Prerequisite for this elective course: 3 credit hours of history
Fulfills SUNY Gen Ed - US History and Civic Engagement
"Disability is everywhere in history, once you begin to look for it, but conspicuously absent in the histories we write." - Douglas C. Baynton, Historian
This course introduces students to the field of disability history through the lived experiences of disabled people, and offers new interpretations of historical themes such as immigration, war and veterans, medicine, politics and social activism, capitalism and labor, and imperialism. We will explore the social, medical, and cultural constructions of disability from the colonial era to the present, and will examine how disability has intersected with other identities such as race, class, and gender.”
