As others have pointed out, Kol Nidre doesn't have any effect on promises between people, but my understanding is that when it comes to "spiritual obligations", it only applies to those you add yourself. Whatever you believe is actually required by Torah, Talmud, or tradition, isn't affected.

And it's often retroactive. Here's the law in California. It's an arrest until they decide it isn't. But if you tried to get away before that, it would have been resisting arrest.
California Code, Penal Code - PEN § 849.5

Current as of January 01, 2026 | Updated by Findlaw Staff

In any case in which a person is arrested and released and no accusatory pleading is filed charging him with an offense, any record of arrest of the person shall include a record of release. Thereafter, the arrest shall not be deemed an arrest, but a detention only.

I had to ask Google.
Donald Trump was nearly cast as
the President of the United States in the Sharknado franchise, though the talks involved Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! rather than the fourth installment.

What Happened with Sharknado 3

First Choice: Producers initially wanted former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to play the fictional president, but negotiations fell through.

Trump Said Yes: Franchise star lan Ziering suggested Donald Trump due to their connection on Celebrity Apprentice, and Trump was reportedly "thrilled to be asked" and agreed to do

The Deal Fell Apart: Contracts were drawn up, but weeks passed without a final signature. Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, informed the production team that Trump was considering a "legitimate run for the presidency" and had to withdraw.

I'm old enough to remember when gas hit a dollar a gallon. IIRC, stations switched the pumps to measure in half gallons until new ones could get installed.

A body-worn camera records things already observed by the police. They can only corroborate. License plate readers record things nobody sees. I'm not sure whether they actually violate the Fourth Amendment, but they do seem different to me.

Also, if you want to teach all kids how to use tools and understand how circuits and plumbing work, great! My junior high had wood shop and home ec for all, and it was good and useful later on. It's the "we'll choose certain kids for that track <wink, wink>" that's a problem.

What do you think of James Hogan's 1979 "The Two Faces of Tomorrow"? A different sort of AI training paradigm, but the scene in which Hector fries an egg is a hoot. (In the shell because it had internalized that it wasn't supposed to break eggs.) Also this explanation to a reporter
"If the cat's got fleas, one guaranteed way of getting rid of them is to throw the cat in the incinerator," Chris came in. "Intense heat is a fail- safe way of killing fleas."

"The problem is it kills cats too," Ron said. "But when you gave me the problem you didn't tell me I wasn't supposed to do that. You assumed my own common sense would tell me that part of it. Except I happen to be a computer. I don't have any common sense."

Damn near indestructible, can be stuck in a backpack, and (to a first order approximation) don't really need to be tuned. People have mentioned ukulele, but I took guitar as an adult, and even then it was frustrating how long it took to get everybody in tune every class.

In seventh grade, in 1977, we had to take a "constitution test" in social studies class as a state requirement. One of the questions was to write out the preamble, and I could hear everybody else singing it under their breath. Just like I was.

Me, too, but we're old. I've just been watching people reacting to a YouTube video explaining "why NBA players in the ’70s and ’80s dribbled like that", and it's fun to see them realize that it was because the refs actually used to call carrying and palming and double dribble and traveling.

I realize that this is late, but rather than (or in addition to) a badge saying that a post has been edited, I'd recommend a prominent indication that a reply, quote, or repost was for the original version (or a specific superceded one if you allow multiple edits), not the final one.

I wound up on the scoreboard *twice* yesterday! Okay, the camera was focused on the girls next to me the first time and the girl behind us the second. I don't have either the hair or the energy to move like that these days. (TBH, I don't think I was ever as photogenic as that guy.)

I knew about Protestants, but as the only Jewish kid in my school in a mostly Catholic Chicago neighborhood, it really surprised me to learn when I got older that most American Christians weren't Catholic. (I was the only kid on my block who didn't go to the local Catholic school.)

I'm still not sure why the yellow was reviewable. The way the rule is written "mistaken identity" is only appropriate if there's a chance that the card was shown to the wrong player *for the offense that was called*.
011
Evan Kirshenbaum @evankirshenbaum.bsky.social · 12/07/2026
There might be special rule changes for this tournament, but these are the 2 (of 5) relevant reasons for VAR from the 2026/27 Laws. The underline indicates changes. "Cards" was changed to "red cards", so the yellow wasn't reviewable. "Mistaken identity" is (only) for "Did I miss who tripped him?"
c. Red cards

DOGSO (especially position of offence and positions of other players)

serious foul play (or reckless challenge)

violent conduct, biting or spitting at another person

using offensive, insulting or abusive action(s)

clearly incorrect second caution

d. Mistaken identity (red or yellow card)

If the referee penalises an offence but has clearly misidentified the player who committed that offence, only the identity of the offender can be reviewed.

That was a rule that got discussed regularly among us AYSO refs. What exactly does "deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper" mean. Opinions differed, but I was really surprised that that one wasn't called.

The watch counts up to 45 minutes, then the stoppage counter counts down to zero. The only real discretion is when they push the button to make the stoppage counter count up. And when they blow the whistle once it hits zero. Even at the AYSO games I did, the higher level refs had them.
010
Evan Kirshenbaum @evankirshenbaum.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
With a decent referee watch, they know exactly how much stoppage time there is. The problem is that they're the only ones that know, and they only say once.
