The number of school days in a year is fixed. If its a two week half term there will be a week less holiday elsewhere. There is no overall change to the amount of holiday days parents have to cover. Ideally there would be more holiday clubs available , but for now grandparents are the main cover.

Sadly the ridiculousness of using phonics exclusively for a language as phonetically irregular as English is covered up by the use of ‘tricky words’ to be learnt as whole words. But the real killer is turning children off books and reading altogether.

Thank you. So clearly explained. I’m sure this also applies to the teaching of reading exclusively by phonics at primary. As my gson says ‘I know the letters but the books are too boring’. He is so right. Also of course we pretend the move from letter by letter to blending is easy, but it isn’t.

The instigator of the Coalition of the willing? Feel Starmers credibility and role over this is so high he would have been an invited guest to meeting with Zelensky.

But that’s because we are adults with a wider experience of the world. Responsible teachers expand their pupils horizons.

Snails can secrete mucus enough to glide over a razor blade sharp edge - there I did learn something- but it wasn’t pleasant. No teaching about ethics of using live creatures was involved.

Definitely need to learn from previous mistakes. You can’t reduce a complex situation to a binary question.

At ITT in 1975 that’s what we were being taught - it was awful, sorry. 3 weeks with a snail, a piece of glass, an orange and a razor blade so ‘we could understand how to let pupils explore and develop their own understanding’ without interfering. Aaargh! Went to university instead.

I think you underestimate the extent to which people can be swept up in a short-lived drama and act against their normal inclinations. It happens often at lots of levels, sucks in even quite reasonable people and never lasts. But when all you need is one vote on one day it doesn’t need to last.

He did an amazing job restoring trust in UK leadership- did you take note of what Ursula von der Leyen said about him? And Macron’s respect. That rebuilding of trust has laid the ground for Burnham and should be acknowledged.

I think Starmer and Reeves prepared the ground for closer relations with the EU. Starmer by rebuilding trust with EU leaders and Reeves by announcements like this.

We could make changes to schools that would not be be so costly. An over proscribed rigid curriculum makes a narrow path that more children cannot find a place on. Start at primary - stop the narrow focus on arbitrary tests (GPS!) and provide breadth and flexibility.

wonder how much the careless attitude to language learning in schools has played a part in negativity towards Europe.? The embarrassment of not being confident in another language turned us towards America? We need to make it normal to speak another European language. @theniceman.bsky.social

What about if you weren’t born in England because your English parents were working/ living abroad ? There are an awful lot of us. Any rule fails when it encounters real humans.

Here's a pattern that summarises the challenges schools face in navigating government directives: INCLUSION is a strength, but ATTENDANCE is a weakness. And there's no acknowledgement in the report of the conflict 🙄
Ofsted judgement chart showing 5 judgements in the middle "Expected standard" band. One is marked as "Strong standard"; one marked "Needs attention"

We had internet early - last century. When searching for something specific it felt like going into an attic full of tottering piles of books and documents looking for one particular page and then getting distracted by all the other stuff.

Instead of putting our time and energy into making changes and doing things in school that the inspectors might want to see, how about looking at the children in front of us, working out what they need most, and finding the best way to do that. That is how we will make schools better.

The more I think about it the more I despise populist politicians. They are supposed to be professionals who understand how politics work and making ludicrous promises which are obviously false is irresponsible and exploitative.

Result isn't everything. History, effort, or skill adds value & meaning. A hand-knitted jumper is different from one bought at Primark. A golden Temu ornament will never be the Sistine Chapel. I held my breath through this video - an office furniture maker in Ankara. Amazing. #GoodMorning, everyone.

We need to move away from the lazy assumption that pupil outcomes are solely dependent on quality of provision. To be honest about the comparative headstart or disadvantage schools have. Very tricky to achieve without complacency.

Hope is a temporary lift especially when based only on words. Deeds are needed to keep hope alive and delivery is needed to move from hope to actuality.

It’s shameful- putting personality first. Feeling sorry for him. Reeves could have been kept in post - she already had an excellent track record. AB rewarding loyalty to him personally over competence is a disaster for us, for the country.

Saw this in the Guardian- absolutely unbelievable. There was an excellent Chancellor in place. There was no need to replace her. Making pathetic excuses like this deserves our scorn - and despair.
But another Labour figure defended him: “John got virtually no notice he was getting this job. He’s not an economist. He didn’t have two years in opposition to prepare. It’s early days and the Treasury is there to support him. He’s very capable – just give him time.”

Yes please can we have leaders who make a case, commit themselves to it, do sensible good relations with the EU themselves and lead people rather than dilly about wondering what people feel and opening the door wide for hostile manipulation of opinion polls.

Heard Burnham say we’ll see how people feel. Find this odd. As PM he has a depth of information and advice available to him and a remit to govern to the benefit of the people and make decisions on our behalf. It’s a leader’s job to lead, not govern by following fickle popularity contests.

Exactly- Nick Clegg was a great communicator but couldn’t deliver. And you’ve already forgotten him. So yes we can be encouraged by a good speech but know all too well that in the gulf between words and deeds is where the work and the skill are needed. 🤞

It will be interesting if it isn’t. WFA has become a go to reason for why people thought KS had to go, but triple lock benefits pensioners more as would raising tax threshold. So if people are Ok with loss of TL is it just emotive language that counts, or lack of financial understanding?

I currently spend a day a week caring for grandchildren. Many of my friends do the same or more. Without that input our families would have to cut their working hours and possibly become eligible for benefits. It is a completely unrecognised unaccounted for contribution to the economy.

I know it is technically a benefit but it is linked to NI payments during your working life. If you haven’t paid enough you don’t get a full pension so it’s not exactly a benefit is it.

No, don’t let them off by implying they are under ‘a spell’. It is a choice to become a sycophant, a personal responsibility, there is no magic, no spell, making you do it.
