Today's @europarl.europa.eu vote to open up the #CommonFisheriesPolicy is shortsighted and disappointing. The #CFP does not need another revision, we do not need new rules nor a long revision process. The existing rules are fine. What we need is their full implementation. #Vision2040

3/3 The ruling, to be appealed by the govt, raises serious questions about #Philippines' ability to tackle #IUUfishing. There's also a serious risk of international repercussions from EU's IUU dialogue/carding and US' IUU Identification schemes who ought to make this clear to Philippine authorities.

2/3 Yet 99 municipalities identify commercial fishing in municipal waters as their top #IUU threat. That monitoring gap is hard to ignore. VMS is more than a dot on a map. Real time vessel helps spot, target and prove cases of non-compliance. This is essential for fisheries enforcement.

2/3 The fleet’s ownership is far more concentrated than vessel records suggest: 54 vessels list 20+ registered owners, but 90% are ultimately controlled by just 7 European companies. More Spanish-owned purse seiners fly the #Seychelles flag than #Spain ’s, according to the report.

🧵China(?)-flagged LIAO DONG YU 578 (IMO 8590350) is an intriguing case. Just 7 years old, this trawler has been repeatedly fishing in Somali waters. It has been also repeatedly targeted by pirates, fetching US$3+ million since 2024 according to Global Initiative. Golden goose anyone? 1/3

I've had my fair share of fisheries theatrics in my career but #PescaRestaurant 's, in Nice, France, is one of the most delicious. This restaurant has no menus and fish selection & (live) prices depend on the catch of the day. Even better, its linked to a marine conservation org, Pesca Foundation.
