lane the trucks take to turn into port. Having to stop at a stoplight magnifies the plastic deformation. (The asphalt’s viscosity provides much of the resistance as the vehicle lingers with the 80,000 load, instantaneous elastic component doesn’t help as much.) And ofc if hot, viscosity ⬇️

Below is a diagram of the concept (from an Oklahoma DOT research report) (5/n)
diagram showing existing surface below stone chips which are ≈60% embedded into asphalt membrane

Chip seal is one-size stone chips embedded onto an asphalt membrane (either an emulsion or hot rubberized asphalt.) The stone chips can be pre-coated with asphalt at a plant, or with emulsion with a pugmill, for better adhesion… (2/n)
chip sealing operation: Hot rubber spray truck followed by chip spreader (fed by aggregate trucks.). Spreader rides on freshly laid atone chips.

Once it fails structurally (on thin pavements). the cracking begins to resemble the back of an alligator, and that’s what the technical name is. More typically the alligator cracking shows up ok the wheelpaths, but here it started around a transverse crack and seems to have snowballed.

It rained into the morning and it’s winter so the 2019 pavement on this street is mostly wet. Just about the time to begin to see cracks in the asphalt. Mechanics of materials at play, in this case thermal expansion and contraction meeting the narrowest section of pavement to resist the tension
Pavement, with two catch basins opposite each other across the street. A crack crosses the pavement at this location, which happens to be narrower than the rest of the road by more than 10% because of the drainage structures. In the vicinity of the catch basin in the foreground some low-severity alligator cracking has formed
