Stillorgan Library is now open! Two floors, over 1,000 square meters - roughly double the size of the old building - flexible study space, meeting rooms, exhibition areas, beautiful children’s section and an outdoor courtyard. Check it out! #Stillorgan #DublinRathdown

Today's €150 cut to the Student Contribution Charge tells students and young people they are nothing more than an afterthought to this government. The @greenparty.ie would abolish student fees over four years, starting with lower and middle income families first #Budget2027 #FundOurFuture
College fees will cost €350 more this academic year than in 2024. €2,350 for 2026/2027

At September’s council meeting we approved 64 mobility hubs across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. This is very welcome though E-scooters were removed from the scheme. E-scooters urgently need regulation and enforcement but removing is not that - and students and younger people will lose out

Thanks @irishtimes.com for publishing my letter in today’s weekend edition. Government parties should fund the public transport network properly and run the timetable already published: www.irishtimes.com/opinion/lett...
Sir,

Cllr John Kennedy, (Letters, September 24th) asks passengers to see an extra 60c a day as the cost of a better public transport service. Many of us would settle for the service we are already paying for.

Ghost buses remain a persistent feature of Dublin’s public transport network: services that appear on Real-Time Passenger Information displays and apps, but never arrive. The Minister for Transport has called cancellation rates on some routes unacceptable, and the National Transport Authority (NTA) has been penalising operators over reliability. None of that is a revenue problem. Those journeys are already funded. Fixing them costs the passenger nothing.

Neither will fare increases deliver the 140 new services promised for 2027. New services need buses, depots and road space - and those are financed through capital expenditure, not from fares. Government's planned fare increases will cut passenger numbers according to NTA data. Some people will cancel their journeys while others will be back in cars.

On the NTA's own figures, a 15 per cent increase on fares raises about €80 million. It costs the commuter roughly €140 a year and it buys no improvement in what actually turns up. Shoppers learned to call this kind of deal shrinkflation: the same price, a smaller product. Here passengers are asked to pay more for a service that is already falling short.

Government parties should fund the network properly, and run the timetable already published.

Yours,

Eva Dowling

Palestinian students are having their study visas refused. Ministers Lawless and O’Callaghan must intervene. The Irish Universities Association (IUA) should speak publicly on behalf of the students and its member universities

Green Party responds to Trinity funding loss

Following the announcement that up to 150 research positions at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) are at risk, the Green Party has called for a fundamental overhaul of the Government’s approach to research funding.

Speaking on the immediate uncertainty facing researchers in Ireland, Green Party Spokesperson for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and Councillor for Stillorgan, Eva Dowling said:

“Research should not be treated like a ‘gig economy’. The situation at Trinity College Dublin is the direct result of a fundamental flaw in how the Government treats research, science and innovation. Successive ministers have prioritised short-term 'ribbon-cutting' exercises over building a robust, world-class research ecosystem.

I have written to the Minister asking that he engage with the affected research staff, universities and unions urgently. The ongoing uncertainty in the science community is unacceptable. ”

Green Party Leader Roderic O’Gorman TD added:

“Ireland punches above its weight when it comes to excellence in research but we cannot build a sustainable knowledge economy on a precarious funding model.

Countries we admire like Denmark and Switzerland have built thriving indigenous research, startup and enterprise sectors with: strong doctoral pipelines; deep public-private collaboration; and a national commitment to translating research into home-grown companies. To make this possible we need a robust, sustainable long-term commitment to funding research across all disciplines, making research a viable career path for graduates in Ireland.”

There’s still time to check seanadvoter.ie and get registered for the new Seanad Higher Education constituency before the February 26th deadline. Please don’t assume you’re on the list as voters on the previous NUI and TCD panels were not automatically added to this new register.
The Green Party together with the Young Greens / Óige Ghlas are urging eligible voters to check the new Higher Education Seanad Constituency register in advance of the 2026 deadline on Thursday, 26th February. Recent graduates and graduates of newly designated institutions will be eligible to vote for the first time.

Last night Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil balanced a €9m hole in our council’s budget, caused by giving a 15pc tax cut in Local Property Tax, by hiking council tenants rents and increasing car parking charges and green waste charges.

🏗️ 👷👷‍♀️ Who believes we need 30,000 fewer skilled construction workers than already envisaged? Well, the government has scaled down its target from 80,000 new skilled construction workers to 50,000 in the National Development Plan (NDP) review

Third level students and their families deserve better than false promises. This government should scrap the €1,000 hike in fees without delay, so that students can prepare and budget for the academic term ahead.
