Serious human rights violations and the repression of democratic opposition are rarely the work of one institution. They involve prosecutors bringing cases, judges handing down sentences, and officials keeping the machinery moving.

Yesterday, children from kindergartens across multiple regions of Russia were made to record birthday messages for Putin, while teachers received special instructions on what the greetings should look like and which Putin quotes to include. All the usual signs of a healthy democracy.

‘As Long As There’s No War’   The phrase appeared among the campaign-material disputes cited in the case that removed Yabloko’s federal list from Russia’s parliamentary election.

The aggressor continues to be ‘alarmed’ by others preparing to defend themselves. In 2026, Russia devoted over 40% of its budget to war and repression, more than it spends on education, healthcare, pensions, welfare, culture, sport, and debt interest combined.

The Kremlin narrative needs Europe to be collapsing for a reason: if sanctions supposedly hurt Europe more than Russia, continuing them can be portrayed as pointless. But they are not.

Kaliningrad is more than a heavily militarised Russian exclave. GPS interference, hybrid operations and pressure on critical infrastructure are making the Baltic region an increasingly important testing ground for confrontation below the threshold of open conflict.

Russia has a new energy policy: if you can’t fix the damage, classify it. After Ukraine’s ‘40 days of impact’, Moscow is now hiding data on refinery operations, energy exports and logistics.

Russia is turning its economy into a black box. War spending, oil production, trade, reserves, demographics, incomes, poverty data, even population figures have disappeared from public view. When the numbers expose the cost of war, Moscow hides the numbers.

Russia’s oil export volumes have fallen to their lowest level since 2018. Oil and gas revenues are down 17%.   The Kremlin’s ‘economic resilience’ narratives keep running into reality.

OTD, twenty years ago, Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in Moscow. A journalist and human rights defender, she exposed corruption and grave human rights abuses through her reporting, despite repeated threats and attempts on her life.

‘Responsibility for the Future’ was the theme at the Valdai conference.   Putin spoke at length about who is responsible for global confrontation.   One responsibility remained conspicuously absent: Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine.

Russia’s information operations don’t always look like propaganda. Sometimes they look like a local journalist, an independent expert, or an ordinary article in a familiar outlet. Except the journalist never existed.

Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index ranked Russia 154th out of 180 countries, 49 places below Ukraine and 82 below the lowest-ranked EU member state. Worth keeping in mind when Moscow next casts itself as a corruption watchdog elsewhere.

Russia’s electoral mathematics:   Remove the only registered openly anti-war party’s nationwide list. Hold an election framed as a test of support for the war. Present the result as national consensus.   The arithmetic works rather better once the variables are controlled.

t Valdai, Putin accused the West of lowering a new ‘Iron Curtain.’ Yet it is the Kremlin that has spent years building barriers between Russian society and the outside world. The Western sanctions are a justified response to Russia’s unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Putin wanted the election to show that Russians support the war.   The only registered party openly opposing the war was removed from the nationwide ballot.   Nothing says ‘public support’ quite like removing the option to disagree.

The Kremlin wants the world to forget who started the war. On 24 February 2022, Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launching the largest conflict on the European continent since the Second World War. The war was not ‘forced upon’ Russia. Russia chose to start it.

Russia likes to state that it has fulfilled its international obligations by declaring and destroying all of its chemical weapons. But in 2018, Russian Military Intelligence brought a novel, undeclared nerve agent to Britain and used it in an attempt to assassinate Sergei and Yulia Skripal.

Russia threatens NATO countries. NATO countries strengthen their defences.   Russia points to those defences and says: ‘See? NATO is threatening us’.   A remarkably efficient way to turn the consequences of your own behaviour into evidence for your narrative.

Sanctions are allegedly ‘ineffective’, according to Putin.   Russia has merely lost major European markets, built a shadow fleet to evade restrictions and become more dependent on a much larger Chinese economy.   Quite a lot of adaptation for something that supposedly has no effect.
