In fact, like our fellow citizens, Rieux was caught off his guard, and we should understand his hesitations in the light of this fact; and similarly understand how he was torn between conflicting fears and confidence. When a war breaks out, people say: "It's too stupid; it can't last long." But though a war may well be "too stupid," that doesn't prevent its last-ing. Stupidity has a knack of getting its way; as we should see if we were not always so much wrapped up in ourselves.

Bangor Savings Bank has 7.4 billion dollars in assets but they want us to crowd source jars of peanut butter and jelly for our neighbors who cannot afford food in this economy.

Marketing materials for a campaign to encourage people to donate jars of peanut butter and jelly to address the food insecurity crisis. Due to SNAP cuts and tariffs, an increasing number of people throughout Maine and the country are unable to afford adequate food for themselves and their families.

There is a a cute image of two anthropomorphized slices of bread— one with jam spread on it and the other with peanut butter— to encourage viewers to form a positive association with the bank matching donations of jars of peanut butter and jelly as though it is remotely adequate in proportion to the assets they possess and the stakes of the problem.

This isn’t true. Roughly half the number of Bernie primary voters defected to the the Republicans as Hillary primary voters in 2008.

Second, the same 12 percent figure emerges in the 2016 VOTER Survey, which was also conducted by YouGov and overseen by the Democracy Fund Voter Study Group (of which I am research director). In 2016, this survey interviewed 8,000 respondents in July, when they were asked their primary vote preference, and then in December, when they were asked their general election preference. This has the advantage of measuring primary preference closer to the primaries themselves and then tracking people over time. But their turnout in both elections has not been validated as of yet.

Another useful comparison is to 2008, when the question was whether Clinton supporters would vote for Barack Obama or John McCain (R-Ariz.) Based on data from the 2008 Cooperative Campaign Analysis Project, a YouGov survey that also interviewed respondents multiple times during the campaign, 24 percent of people who supported Clinton in the primary as of March 2008 then reported voting for McCain in the general election.
