In general, I use contour on hair or edges. Shadows are for shaded areas of course. (I'm a bit embarrassed because there are several parts I missed on that piece but I was also heavily sick when I worked on it.) (2/2)

Please let me know if I'm misunderstanding, but are you asking how I decide when to use hatching as a shadow or contour? I think it's best to treat your lineart as a standalone and then ask yourself how to give it shape with hatching. It's easier for me to see where to place them that way. (1/2)
