Confused by Boolean search?😕 🔹AND – Returns content with both terms. Content with only one term is excluded. 🔹OR – Expands results to include content with either term or both. 🔹NOT – Returns content with one term while excluding the other. Narrows search. #AcademicSky #Medlib #PhDSky #EPMCTopTips
Image demonstrating how a boolean search works. If you search A AND B the search will return content that contain both A and B. Content with only A or only B will not be included. If you search A OR B the search will return content that contain either A or B or both A and B. This expands your search results. If you search A NOT B then the search will return content that contains A in the absence of B, any content mentioning B will be excluded. This narrows your search results.

What is Green Open Access? #greenOAday Green Open Access, or self-archiving, allows researchers to share a version of their published work for free! 🔓 Confused by #OpenAccess jargon? See @sarahhlib.bsky.social jargon buster below👇 #AcademicChatter #AcademicSky #ECRChat #PhDSky #MedSky
Flowchart titled Open Access Jargon Buster shows the scholarly publication process by S. Humphreys 07-09-2022 CC-BY-SA. It reminds you before you start to consider: Funder requirements, Pre-registration, Publication routes, your copyright, and ORCID. Step one is to draft a manuscript paper which can then go to a preprint server and then to a publisher or straight to a publisher. The article then goes through the peer review process, and once edits are accepted there are two different routes. The first route is to deposit the author accepted manuscript peer-reviewed version into a digital repository. This is Green OA - the article is free to access in a repository and/or under a timed embargo period. Note if you publish Gold OA you can deposit the VoR. The second route is to select a license of Copyright or an Open license and make the formatted manuscript publisher's verision open access. There are three different paths for this route. One, if there’s no charge this is called Diamond or Platinum. Two, if there is a fee this is Gold open access where all articles in the journal are licensed for open access. Three, if there is a subscription journal, where all but ‘hybrid’ articles are under the journal's copyright. Where most are pay-to-read, and you pay an article processing charge then this is a hybrid open access where this is a subscription journal where you can pay an APC to make a single article open.
