19th edition: The classic Gotthard route (Route 42)
The Gotthard is Switzerland. And Switzerland is the Gotthard. The mountain is intimately linked to Swiss national identity. We take the historic Gotthard railway from Basel to Milan.

The historic Gotthard railway was sidelined when the Gotthard Base Tunnel was opened in 2016, but you can still travel on the classic route, which is why we have chosen to make it Route 42 in the 19th edition of Europe by Rail. Photo © Leonid Andronov / Dreamstime

One of our more surprising journeys this year was an utterly impromptu ride on the Glacier Express. Seeing an almost empty carriage seemed too good a chance to miss. So we hopped aboard and paid the Zuschlag on the train.

This route is a very useful fast hop south over the Alps from southern Germany to the sunshine of Italy, but it is well worth doing in its own right and, as well as fine cities such as Munich and Verona, the mountain landscape changes in character from one valley to the next.
