Ireland is holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU: meaning it has a bigger role in EU decision-making right now + is in a good position to influence the update to the EU's live transport laws positively. This is vital for the countless animals suffering in this trade.

Following years of campaigning by @ethicalfarmie.bsky.social, @dierenrecht.bsky.social + @eyesonanimals.bsky.social, the NVWA is the first competent authority in Europe to take enforcement action against these cruel routes, where calves are frequently not fed for 30+ hours. EU law must follow.

Over 164,000 mice were used in the EU in 2023 to test human medicine batches, most injected with botulinum toxin to find the dose that kills half of them. That could change soon. Europe's pharmacopoeia body has restarted its Botulinum Toxin Working Party to build a roadmap to end this painful test.

During force-feeding, a funnel is shoved down the oesophagus of these birds. This can damage their internal organs, and often makes them sick. This happens up to three times a day. There's no way this should be legal. Share if you agree. #HowIsThisLegal #ForwardForAnimals

‼️ A new report by @faunalytics.bsky.social reveals nearly 8 BILLION male chicks were killed globally in 2024. This is happening as male chicks are seen as disposable in the egg sector, due to their inability to lay eggs. This awful practice should not be legal: bit.ly/4xTEMXP

⑤ Law breaches are slipping through the cracks in the transport sector. For example, @dyrbeskyt.bsky.social revealed last year that pigs are being sent on illegally long journeys, with a pitstop falsely being recorded as a "final destination". 🐖 The rules must become much stricter.

For nearly 20 years, EU law has prohibited catching chickens by their legs. Yet in the Netherlands, it remained common practice, leaving millions of birds at risk of broken wings and legs. After 6 years of legal action by Wakker Dier, the court has enforced the law with penalties up to €60,000.
