And becoming more visible in the UK. As with weights and measures, we find ourselves caught between two systems. En tout cas, moi je préfère le système utilisé dans la majorité des pays de l’Europe.

Dover was no “spontaneous protest” – it’s an organised group and we know who they are
The action in Dover came as a surprise because hard right groups are getting better at operating below the radar. There will be more “protests” like this to come

Sometimes we get asked: is electoral reform really a priority right now? Yes - because how we elect our MPs impacts everything: the governments we get, the laws they pass, the direction the country takes. We can’t solve the problems we face without a healthy democracy.

Under First Past the Post, some seats are seen as "battlegrounds" and others as ones that can be safely ignored. To really "put power in every postcode", Andy Burnham needs to address this fundamental injustice. New article in @left-foot-forward.bsky.social by our CEO @emmacampaigner.bsky.social:
leftfootforward.org
If Andy Burnham wants to deliver power in every postcode, he has to overhaul our broken democracy
If it doesn't happen, "power in every postcode" will take its place alongside levelling up: a phrase that moved attention around the country without ever moving power.

#OTD 45 years ago, #metric restriction signs 🚗 were introduced on 🇬🇧 UK roads. From 13 August 1981, metric units 📏 could be used for the first time, alongside imperial units, to indicate height, width and length restrictions on 🇬🇧 UK road signs. Weight restriction signs went metric on the same day.
An imperial width restriction sign indicating a width restriction of 6 feet 6 inches, together with an equivalent metric sign from 1981 showing a width restriction of 2.0 metres.

The use of stones in this context strikes me as just perverse. In my early experience, stones were generally used to indicate the weight of people and potatoes. 4 000 kg is 4 tonnes, which is so close to 4 imperial tons, that it’s the only one we use, even on our benighted traffic signs !

Erasmus is about more than the flow of people between our countries. It's about the flow of friendship and opportunity too. More than a hundred thousand could benefit in the first year alone, each one a new bond between our nations. Bridget Phillipson MP, Secretary of State for Education
