One more afternoon bump for these pieces from yesterday. I landed around 800 words for each, but with practice I think I can get them to 500. Together we can invent recaps that are less, well, recappy.

Then I wrote about Garrett Crochet and a good comeback spoiled, while the Yankees march onward in their uniquely mechanical way toward destiny or demise:

Good morning. My goal this month is to use the postseason to do a little more shortform writing. First, I wrote a little about the White Sox, who were the better team Wednesday just often enough:

AL Wild Card Game 2: White Sox Defeat Astros by Technical Knockout | Baseball Prospectus
If Game 2 had been scored like a boxing match, this would probably be the start of a preview and not a recap. Houston’s entire advantage resided in the arm of Hunter Brown, so naturally seven of the f...

Ant cam is my favorite postseason camera angle. I like the idea of the baseball players being 400 feet tall, accidentally crushing unseen farmhouses and trampling pastures as they play their incalculable, wordless giant games like an old Mickey Mouse cartoon

Meanwhile, for Boston-New York, I wrote about the feeling of destiny, and how this series feels... like a pleasant throwback, somehow? www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article...
It’s very funny to think that the Boston-New York series of the past were grotesqueries, bloated four-hour contests packed with bloated, muscular hitters, a combination of sweat, money, and patriotism boiled into a soup. And okay, the jingoism remains intact, enhanced by the sounds of the overstuffed four-man postseason booth and the nearly visible orchestra-hit percussion ricocheting through Yankee Stadium. The aesthetics are still problematic. But if you look at the actual rosters, you’re struck by the quaintness of the whole affair: actual starting pitchers! Who might actually, if they’re feeling good, throw 100 pitches! Especially since they’re facing lineups that give them a little rest for two or three batters at the bottom. It’s enough to make one drunk with nostalgia.

Good morning. Here’s a hybrid recap/preview for the ongoing Astros-White Sox series. Hunter Brown will need to change things up and throw strikes today, and the White Sox will need to stop swinging through them.

Meaning isn’t something you create on your own. We do nothing in isolation, least of all this. Meaning is a dialectic, both process and product, an invisible mass filling the space between us that we breathe and shape as easily as air. It’s a conversation between teammates, between pitcher and hitter, between a fielder and a fan with a particularly tasty-looking basket of nachos, between TV and radio, between writer and reader, between the audience behind home plate and the one tuning in from an ocean away. It’s a dialogue with the memories of playing catch and ripping open card packs, with the faded marks of your parent’s pencil in a scorebook, with the winners and losers of ages past, with the hopes and dreams of every soul who was shut out from the game and kept on playing anyway.

Instead of seeing this as a screw-up, why not just see it as a victory? Projections aren’t commandments. They’re where the metrics see a season pointed. Murphy and the front office made this team better than it was in February, and they deserve all the credit for that.

3.0 and 3.5 WARP, it should be noted. Look, PECOTA missed on Turang. Let’s not pretend. But also Turang totally transformed as a hitter. His exit velocities just spiked overnight. Batters just don’t do that, and if PECOTA started predicting it in other players, it’d be wrong a lot more often.

Trick is you have to correct it without breaking everything else. These numbers come from metrics, and if the metrics work for most non-Brewers teams, you can’t just throw them out

Pat Murphy is allowed to do whatever he needs to do to rally his troops, but just once I'd like to see a manager sit down after Game 162 and say, "Before the season, PECOTA put us at 80 wins and in retrospect, they had us completely pegged. We were clearly very average."
