Since this is social media, I make this same claim to all emotions including anger: chemical reactions, almost entirely subconscious, are critical to emergent consciousness and moral implications.

Our brains chemicals and electric signals. LLMs (and neural networks more generally) can mimic the electric signals and using those signals also act as if they have chemical reactions. But suffering is largely chemical, as is sorrow, and joy, and much of what we call consciousness

In the middle of another paragraph, they use an aside clause to say, “However bad left wing censoriousness is or was…” Yet, to that point in the article, the only claim of left wing censoriousness was some student protest of conservative speakers—which isn’t censorship.

Someone gave me a HomePod mini. I sometimes us it to listen to sleep meditation podcasts at night. It take me 4 commands to get it to do what I want (turn on podcast, skip forward 5 minutes, set volume, set sleep timer). I tried to set up a shortcut to do it all for me and failed.

I mean, being an asshole is often an important part of telling jokes, particularly when it comes in the form of “saying the taboo thing out loud.” It matters who you are being an asshole to, though, as is the underlying truth and the assumptions involved.

I think “author has something important to say” and “author is very good at writing” are different things. I think the things that stick with you are the ones where the author is trying to express something that is relevant to you, even if they don’t quite nail it.

Back after Obergefell, my socially liberal online circle had a debate about the next major rights debate we’d be having as a society. We pretty much all agreed it’d be about robotics. Putting aside the optimism, I think we all assumed we’d be pro-robotics rights. And in reality, super anti AI.

We will certainly see, but my favorite part of watching those shorts is watching weird dudes do weird things. I suddenly find myself caring what sandwich a guy is gonna role up today or whether that other guy will grind his skateboard down the pipe in the woods he made. AI can’t do that.
