Improving the level of precision and control of complex quantum many-body systems, such as cold atom setups, solid-state superconducting setups, or molecules in electromagnetic cavities, is crucial for the development of quantum science and technology. Such systems are subject to dissipative coupling to their complex environment via noise, dephasing, losses, or other decoherence sources. It is paramount to understand these decoherence mechanisms and their effects on the dynamics of quantum many-body systems.
Here we aim at establishing a top-level network focused on frontier research on those complex quantum systems interacting with their environment, by building upon the existing teams spread across four universities of Eucor.

Our objectives are:

To set up a network of students and researchers in open quantum many-body systems across the European Campus, through an Internship Exchange Program, that will be the seed for future lasting collaborations between Eucor members
To organize four bi-annual short meetings, plus a one-week international workshop on quantum many-body systems coupled to their environment
To prepare application for external funding, e.g. an MSCA Doctoral Network.
This project will foster new collaborations among Eucor partners, intensify cross-border exchanges, and contribute to the international attractiveness and visibility of the Upper Rhine Region on quantum science and technology.

Materials scientist Oana Cojocaru-Mirédin from @uni-freiburg.de and Ovidiu Ersen from @ipcmslab.bsky.social @unistra.fr launched the ‘QuBAT’ project in February. They use a specific microscopy technique to analyse the ageing process of #batteries. Eucor is funding the project with #SeedMoney.

Batteries are one of the most promising storage technologies playing an essential role in meeting the EU goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) dominate the market but their low-capacity graphite anode cannot meet the ever-growing energy demand. Thankfully, high theoretical capacity and sustainable silicon-based materials are envisioned in science nowadays as promising alternatives for graphite anode. However, volume expansion typically takes place during the cycling process. This results in premature cell failure hindering the development of higher-performant and more sustainable LIBs.

Therefore, in QuBAT we aim to understand the volume expansion and its resulting degradation mechanisms (nanoscale cracks and intermediate phase formation) in battery materials under high ionic flux during the charging/discharging process by employing a unique approach named correlative microscopy. The key idea is to quantify these volumetric changes and to employ the knowledge gained in synthesizing more robust anode materials to these mechanical degradations. These fundamental understandings will not only produce groundbreaking research in science but will also be utilized for other Li-free battery systems, such as sodium-ion batteries.
