The first thing is a technical question. The second thing is in the category of actually hard problems. Naturally the focus is on the first thing. I see it all the time with climate change. That said, the common point in both is that the real problem is not the technology but who owns/controls it.

Do you know for a fact that the LLM wasn’t writing code (coding up a little on-the-fly calculator) on demand?

It is a closed model but OTOH we’re talking about something more conceptually complex than arithmetic.

My own experience: I fed Claude a a method of test (an unpublished draft ASHRAE standard) and a test script, and it was able to point out inconsistencies between them. I guarantee it had never seen these documents before because it’s something I wrote.

I’m also not sure how “actively avoiding fitness” and “leading a sex cult” make any sense together but see my previous comment.

Yud does have a publicly stated aversion to exercise (“any activity requiring physical stamina”). That’s the furthest thing from rational but that doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know about the guy, which is that he’s a master rationalizer - a common flavor of smart-stupid.

GreenEngineer @eubanksengineeringresearch.com · 3h
He isn’t interested in mass persuasion. He doesn’t consider the masses worthy. He’s interested in accessing the levers of power and seems to be doing a decent job. That said if he was as rational as he claims he would exercise for the health (and mental!) benefits. But or course, he’s not.

And that goes double if you manage to convince them that fly fishing is more “sporting”.

Sell a person a fish, and you have sold one fish. Teach a person to fish, and you can sell them expensive, proprietary bait and tackle for life.

We just *love* deploying technologies before they’re ready.

This is a substantially less mature technology than personal computing. The thing I always remember is what the title of engineer use to mean: the dude that is responsible for making the boiler not explode and kill everyone onboard. Which still regularly happen through the steam power era.

That is an option, though it takes some setup. Anyone can download an open-weights model and rent time on a server. You don’t physically control the computer but you legally own the data.

That issue has moved substantially in the last 18 months. It takes some doing (mostly forcing it to check its own assumptions) but you can get quite accurate information very reliably. My bot tells me when it doesn’t know or can’t figure something out.

But not all relationships have an institutionally-enforced power imbalance from the word “go”.

Almost like… My favorite part is that the original Wager assumes that God is both stupid and shallow, but somehow that never comes up. Yuddism just assumes all the followers are stupid and shallow. Which is at least less likely to get one thrown in the Pit for blasphemy.

We disagree. I’m think that sentience is required to *form* intent. But many things in our technological environment (not even AI) *embody* intent. The thing did not formulate the intent. It reflects the intent of its creators.
000
GreenEngineer @eubanksengineeringresearch.com · 19h
Personally I think it is riskier to forget that these things *do* act from intention - the intention of their creators.
100
GreenEngineer @eubanksengineeringresearch.com · 19h
Thing is they don’t need to be sentient or conscious or whatever in order to have intent. They very clearly, let us say, *reflect* intent - the intent represented in their fine tuning. They also appear to have other intent, not intended from their training, but that’s an emergent property.

There were Trump voters who cited his record on women’s rights and thought he would protect the right to an abortion. The only conclusion I can reach is that the average “low-information” voter is barely sentient.

Obama had a narrow window of opportunity to prosecute the crooks that caused GFC. Instead we got a wink-and-nod attitude about robosigning and a bunch of people lost their homes. No small part of where we are today is a direct result of Obama’s unwilling to be aggressive with his banker buddies.

I also don’t think most people who were not personally affected realized just HOW BAD things were. If they had we would have seen banker’s heads on spikes outside the city walls. Instead we got a managed crash landing for most people and a feather bed for the people who caused it.

Thanks. As an overeducated white dude (who also happens to be Large) I feel obligated to take any opportunity to be a pain in the ass in the service of a good cause. Mostly that’s climate change but I like to diversify.

I refer to our economic system as cannibal capitalism for a reason. But the point of catabolic collapse is that it represents a destructive method of wealth generation.

GreenEngineer @eubanksengineeringresearch.com · 29/09/2026
Contrast, we’ve been living bubble-to-bubble with an economy that is churning hard, but is increasingly occupied by producing make-believe profits rather than actual products. Waiting for the other shoe to drop is stressful - often more so than actually dealing with it when it happens.

GreenEngineer @eubanksengineeringresearch.com · 29/09/2026
People who didn’t actually lose their jobs and homes had no idea how bad things actually were in 2008. If they had we would have seen the heads of big banks strung up rather than getting their runways foamed by Obama.

I would like to see more men talking about how to and peer pressuring each other into calling out misogyny and rape culture. Going against social norms is hard, and it helps to share tips and support.

Honestly though at the time it was just a reflex. Neurodivergent compulsive honesty. I didn’t realize what I had done until later. When I realized I’d made my boss publicly swallow his misogyny - that was fun. But it took a few hours.

Informing my boss, in front of the client, that my (female) colleagues were full-fledged engineers in their own right and not “assistants” as he had presented them. That was a high point.

It’s like burning your furniture to heat your home. It works for a while but it is a bad (lethal) long-term strategy.

A society that has built more infrastructure than it has the ability or willingness to maintain under tightening resource constraints, enters a state of catabolism and infrastructure decay, analogous to a starving organism that metabolizes its own muscles.

GreenEngineer @eubanksengineeringresearch.com · 28/09/2026
When your fundamental economic imperative, writ large, is to sacrifice resiliency in the name of “efficiency” (profit concentration), and you let that cook for 20 years, people feel it. In 2008, the economy broke. Now the economy is extremely fragile. Waiting for the other shoe is stressful.

GreenEngineer @eubanksengineeringresearch.com · 28/09/2026
We are 20 years further down the slope of catabolic collapse so more people are feeling the crocodiles nipping at their heels. A catabolically-collapsing economy eats from the bottom up, in the absence of strong state.

The whole thing is a total distraction from the real problem, which is that our society and economy are entirely ecologically illiterate. Nearly everything wrong with society (including all problematic aspects of AI) stems from that.

to piggyback off Hoo again, the other shoe here is we need humanities and social science folks to understand that these discoveries of science (most in the last 150ish years) are real— that the laws of physics or biology aren’t a bit, germ theory isn’t debatable like Marxism, etc
