I’m sure there’s also plenty of cases where people are doing it in shittier ways for worse reasons, I just worry that what I see in some of the responses is folks abandoning any nuance about the vagaries of social existence to shit on people for using AI in ways they personally don’t want to.

I can imagine some folks seeing that as bad in some way and won’t for the person to not take a stand, but the reality is we all gotta pick our battles and sometimes, when the stakes are low and the bullshit is high, we take the easier road, and in this fucked up world I can’t judge that.

Mine is a weird case of a person who’s interested in AI research taking a shot at some informal testing, but I can think of much more normal situations where someone is socially pressured to do the thing and lacks the time to do it well want doesn’t want to be hassled for that fact.

I do my best to try to imagine the strongest ethical objections that might underly the sort of disgust I can imagine this story evoking in folks, such that I somehow made the thing less fun or good for the other people involved. Given the situation though I don’t find them especially compelling.

So I had it help me pick my bracket. I made some calls myself, such as deciding Duke would lose because Fuck Duke, so it wasn’t a pure test, but largely I went with its recommendations. And it won the league. And that was really fascinating for me, far more than if I’d tossed a coin.

To give a weird personal example, I was randomly added into a March Madness bracket zero stakes league as a joke. The league included one guy I knew and the rest I didn’t. Not something I cared about, I could have just tapped out, but figured I’d make the best of the situation and test out the AI.

First, I think one major disconnect on this topic is some folks are acting like Fantasy sports is or should only be an intrinsically motivated recreational activity, rather than an activity folks might feel obligated to do and do well for lots of extrinsic reasons. But that just seems false.
