The last article we want to show you is the ethnographic snapshot of our latest issue. 𝐀𝐥𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐞𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 & 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐚𝐮𝐛𝐞𝐫 have conducted multi-sited fieldwork on high-altitude farmsteads to research how centuries-old seasonal transhumance gives way to industrial dairy farming. 🔗 tinyurl.com/ee5601
Image that reads:
Unveiling Hidden Changes: Ethnographic Perspectives on Agrarian Worlds in the Italian Eastern Alps.
In this text, Almut Schneider and Elisabeth Tauber use multi-sited fieldwork on high-altitude farmsteads and Alpine pastures to explore how diverse "bodies" (humans, animals, plants, infrastructure) transform within shifting farmstead (“Hof”) assemblages. They reveal how intensified dairy operations have contributed to Alpine pasture abandonment and woody encroachment, while the Hof’s apparent continuity obscures a fundamental transformation in coordinating land, animals, and work.

Image for Article Three of Ethnologia Europaea 56(1) with the journal's logo in the top right corner. The text reads: Which animal is feared the most, and why? In this text, Riin Magnus draws on self-reported narratives from the Estonian Folklore Archives to examine which wild animals are most commonly feared, how these fears are explained and transferred to landscapes, as well as how they are embedded in broader cultural genres of threat. The author also shows how local wild animals have disappeared as agents of fear in children’s threats, which also shows a shift in pedagogy as well as a change in everyday relations with nature. In his article, Francisco Martínez explores how gifts can differ from the classic Maussian theories and therefore be delayed or overdue – by example of an old Soviet library left behind in a school. Since the giver is long gone, the gift has lost its connection to the present and is still a gift.
