So, what do we know, where are the gaps and how can research help inform practical improvements? On Wednesday 28th October, we're bringing together four experts for our webinar, Shrimp Welfare: Shedding Light on Aquaculture's Fastest-Growing Sector.

Ethical Seafood Research @ethicalseafood.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Growing scientific evidence suggests that decapod crustaceans, including shrimp, are likely to be sentient. Yet research into their welfare needs and how best to support them in commercial farming systems is still developing.

Ethical Seafood Research @ethicalseafood.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Shrimp are farmed in their billions, but how much do we really know about their welfare? As shrimp aquaculture continues to expand, so too do the questions around how these animals experience farming conditions, handling, transport and slaughter.

With ice slurry already widely used in aquaculture, the research aims to establish whether refining this approach could meet acceptable welfare standards, while recognising that alternative methods may ultimately be needed.

Ethical Seafood Research @ethicalseafood.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Drawing on ongoing research through ESR’s Harvest Well Egypt project and at @ucm.es, Wasseem will examine how different ice slurry conditions affect tilapia, the challenges of accurately assessing consciousness and what the findings could mean for improving welfare during harvest.

Ethical Seafood Research @ethicalseafood.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Can ice slurry be refined as a humane slaughter method for Nile tilapia? That’s the question ESR’s Founder and Head of Programmes, Wasseem Emam, will explore during his presentation at the HSA Conference 2026.

As we work to improve aquatic animal welfare in regions where environmental and economic realities can shape what is possible in practice, these wider conversations around sustainable food production, resource use and locally appropriate solutions are an important part of the picture.

One example of this in practice is Heliopolis University’s operational pilot aquaponic system, which Wasseem and Nada had the opportunity to learn more about. Combining aquatic animal and plant production, it offers a practical example of how food production systems can be adapted.
