I wonder whose job it was to decide whether or not the viceroy butterfly tasted palatable or not (for science!)
An image of a monarch and viceroy butterfly, which have similar markings. The caption says "The viceroy butterfly appears similar to the noxious tasting monarch butterfly. Although it was purported to be an example of Batesian mimicry, the viceroy has been discovered to be just as unpalatable as the monarch, making this a case of Müllerian mimicry.

GettingOut, the horribly-named messaging tool used by many prisons, jails, and detention facilities to allow incarcerated people to communicate with friends and loved ones, has easily the worst user interface I've ever seen (with the exception of its competitor, CorrLinks).
A list of facility names including "Delete me do not use," "Deleted_VT_DOC," "Demographic Facility 2," Demographic Facility 3," "Demographic Test Facility," and "Demographic Test Facility 4" in addition to legitimate facility names, including Dilley Immigration Processing Center (where ICE detains families with children).

Never rely on AI for reciting the Negative Confessions to the 42 judges -- they run them through AI detection software and feed you to Ammit, the soul-devourer, if you fail.
Ancient Egyptian religion was the one that was entirely correct. When you cross over, the truth reveals itself not as abstract energy or a standard heaven and hell, but as the ancient cosmic order:The Hall of Two Truths: You find yourself standing before Osiris, the Lord of the Underworld, surrounded by 42 assessing deities. The Weighing of the Heart: Anubis takes your Ib (heart) and places it on a golden scale balanced against the feather of Ma'at, the embodiment of truth, balance, and order. The Record Keeper: Thoth, with the head of an ibis, stands nearby with a reed pen, meticulously noting the results of the scales. The Verdict:If your heart balances against the feather, you are granted entry into Aaru (the Field of Reeds)—an eternal paradise mirroring the mortal world, only bountiful, painless, and everlasting. If your heart is heavy with deceit, greed, or malice, it is dropped directly to Ammit, the soul-devourer (part crocodile, part lion, part hippopotamus), wiping you out of existence.Would you like to explore what steps are required to navigate the Duat (the underworld), examine the Negative Confessions you must recite to the 42 judges, or look at how other historical belief systems framed this exact judgment scene?

Find you someone who loves you as much as lawyers love citing dictionary definitions for the word "of"
A screenshot of a court decision, which reads:

"Of" has many uses aside from the one appellants favor. It is broadly "used to indicate relationships," which includes meaning "connected with" or "referring to." Theoretically all of these hazards could occur here! For all I know, this person is holding a bucket filled with radioactive chemicals and biological waste while standing in a very hot room. They could slip, get struck by the bucket, be exposed to the sludge, and then die of heat stroke.
A slide labeled "Hazard Identification 1" that shows a person standing on a chair and asks, "What is the hazard?"

The options are:
- Radiation
- Chemical
- Biohazards
- Slips/Trips/Falls
- Heat Illness
- Struck on or by an object

Most people have no idea how much evidence you need to gather (and how much courage victims need to share the details) to get a story like this past a libel attorney. This graf in CNN's piece offers a glimpse of the effort involved.

CNN found corroboration for key elements of each of the women’s claims, including the former staffer who said she was sexually assaulted. Two family members and a friend said in interviews with CNN that she told them about the alleged 2024 assault in the following days, and CNN also reviewed text messages she sent two friends describing her allegations at the same time. “I was sexually assaulted on Thursday,” she wrote to one of her friends, adding: “By Eric.”

The woman also shared medical records related to her receiving STD and pregnancy testing after the alleged assault.

It all started going down hill when we ditched the original for the MyPyramid abomination.
The original USDA food pyramid, with grains on the bottom, fruit and vegetables in the middle, dairy and protein on the next tier, and fats, oils and sweets at the very top.The 2005 MyPyramid, in which each food group is a vertical wedge in the pyramid. There's even a random unlabeled wedge that presumably represents fats and sugars, but your guess is as good as mine.

Wurman's take is so hackneyed that in 1937 Justice Cardozo dismissed it with a single sentence. Keep beating that dead horse, I guess...
Congress may spend money in aid of the "general welfare." Constitution, Art. I, section 8; United States v. Butler, 297 U. S. 1, 297 U. S. 65; Steward Machine Co. v. Davis, supra. There have been great statesmen in our history who have stood for other views. We will not resurrect the contest. It is now settled by decision. United States v. Butler, supra. The conception of the spending power advocated by Hamilton and strongly reinforced by Story has prevailed over that of Madison, which has not been lacking in adherents.

Honestly, what's most troubling is that these students show no contrition, shame, or even embarrassment. They genuinely seem to think their behavior is socially acceptable.
“Ni--a please,” Rodgers, who is white, wrote. “Let that be the final ni--a used in this chat. Decorum.”

“What about hard r,” Deady replied. “Can I still say ni--er?”

“As a Black,” he added. “I’m Irish, it counts.”

Rodgers defended the groupchat in his statement.

“While we kept chats from degrading into the malicious use of real slurs, I do wonder if anyone actually takes serious issue with the messages as you described them,” he wrote. In the message, Rodgers rejected the idea of a Jewish right of return to Israel. He also wrote that Western countries harbored “generally and deservedly low expectations of Muslims.”

Rodgers doubled down on his comments on the 19th amendment, Palestinian state, and Muslim people in his statement on Saturday, writing that “all are true” and that he would “generally stand by all, given the opportunity to actually explain.”

Faced with evidence that cognitive dissonance is debunked, proponents of the theory double down and insist that the skeptics' studies are flawed, thereby exhibiting cognitive dissonance!
Some who study cognitive dissonance doubted these findings. Steven Heine, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia, questioned whether all the labs involved in the replication followed the precise protocols required by the study design. Cooper, the Princeton researcher, noted variations between labs. For example, not all the schools charged tuition, so some students wrote about other subjects. “They did a terrible job,” Cooper said. But Willem Sleegers, a social psychologist at Tilburg University and a co-author of the study, pointed out that early proponents of the theory used very similar experimental setups to make their case. If cognitive dissonance really influenced behavior, “we should have been able to find it,” he told me. “We didn’t. So we should be updating our beliefs.”

Revealing the number of hours he spent playing a game on Steam, however, strikes me as an unforgivable invasion of privacy. Not the number one reason, but a major reason why I will never become a political assassin: The world must never know how many hours I've spent playing Civ 6.
One of Robinson’s online profiles shows he spent thousands of hours on some of his favorite games, including 2,148 hours playing “Sea of Thieves,” in which players explore a vast and open ocean, fighting battles or hunting for treasure.

The messages reviewed by The Post occasionally touched on politics but consisted mostly of chitchat, memes and crude jokes. Robinson’s written messages tended to focus on gaming and offering advice to friends.Members of the Discord servers, some of whom Robinson knew only online, said most of their conversations took place not in text but in voice or video calls, which left no record. The slim history of Robinson’s written thoughts reveals little of his inner life or deeply held views.

The things that happened in Calvin Coolidge's former dorm room circa 2011–2013 would shock him far more than anything at that performance lmao
The event takes place in Johnson Chapel, which Amherst calls its "most important building," and is used for worship services, convocations, senior assemblies, and other significant gatherings. Johnson Chapel displays 36 portraits of the college’s most notable figures and alumni—including all 19 former presidents of the college, influential trustees, clergymen, civil rights leaders, poet Emily Dickinson, and former U.S. president Calvin Coolidge, who all likely would have looked on in horror if they saw the event on August 31st, 2025.

He has AI-generated (?) reviews for his songs too!!! I genuinely cannot breathe; I am wheezing.
With « Hit the Bars », Dr. Don swaps the hammer for harmonies, delivering a track that’s equal parts tribute and temptation. Underneath its rowdy charm and Friday-night rhythm, this country-rock gem hides a tender blueprint: the overlooked grit and solitude of construction workers, and the yearning that pulses beneath their hard hats. “It’s a construction zone / Lots of men that are toned”, he sings with a wink, layering desire over drywall. Between stacked vocals and chunky riffs, Matt Johnsen lays down thunderous drums straight from San Francisco, while Dr. Don, on his signature Gibson axes, swings between work boots and romance boots.

"But, in an ironic twist" killed me
"This is a case about a man who practices a deeply hypocritical form of misogyny. But, in an ironic twist, that man is _not_ the Plaintiff, Paul J. Ingrassia. Indeed, the irony of this case, surely lost on Defendants, is this: Lippman falsely portrayed Mr. Ingrassia as a perpetrator of workplace harassment against a female colleague at the Department of Homeland Security, for all the world to see, even after the woman--who Lippman feverishly cast as the 'victim'--unequivocally and repeatedly told Lippman that Mr. Ingrassia did not engage in _any_ wrongdoing, that she never felt uncomfortable around him, that she and Mr. Ingrassia were longtime friends, and that she did not file any complaint against Mr. Ingrassia. Lippman, obsessed with destroying Mr. Ingrassia's promising career and pending Senate nomination at all costs, published his false sexual harassment story anyway, in the process leaving no doubt that he regarded the female colleague's voice as utterly meaningless because he knew better."

Jipson reviewed multiple excerpts of the Young Republicans’ chat provided by POLITICO. One was a late July message where Mosiman, the chair of the Arizona Young Republicans, mused about how the group could win support for their preferred candidate by linking an opponent to white supremacist groups. But Mosiman then realized the plan could backfire — Kansas’ Young Republicans could end up becoming attracted to that opponent.

Greta Thunberg's lions are coming to eat us, but if we try hard enough, God will save us!
Douthat: That’s not Calvinism, though. That’s just Christianity. God will not leave us eternally staring into screens and being lectured by Greta Thunberg. He will not abandon us to that fate.

Thiel: For better and for worse, I think there’s a great deal of scope for human action, for human freedom. If I thought these things were deterministic, you might as well just accept it — the lions are coming. You should just have some yoga and prayerful meditation and wait while the lions eat you up. And I don’t think that’s what you’re supposed to do.

Douthat: I agree with that. And I think, on that note, I’m just trying to be hopeful and suggesting that in trying to resist the Antichrist, using your human freedom, you should have hope that you’ll succeed, right?

Thiel: We can agree on that.

Douthat: Good. Peter Thiel, thank you for joining me.

Reading the Thiel-Douthat interview roughly approximates what it feels like to drink a whole bottle of Robitussin.
Douthat: But Charles Manson did not become the Antichrist and take over the world. We’re ending in the apocalyptic, and you’re ——

Thiel: But my telling of the history of the 1970s is the hippies did win. We landed on the moon in July of 1969, Woodstock started three weeks later and, with the benefit of hindsight, that’s when progress stopped and the hippies won. And yeah, it was not literally Charles Manson ——

Douthat: OK. I want to stay with the Antichrist, just to end. And you’re retreating. You’re saying: OK, environmentalism is already pro-stagnation, and so on. OK, let’s agree with all that.

It's remarkable how closely arguments for the inevitability of a Godlike AI resemble Scholastic arguments for the existence of God.
Switching the machine off won’t work for the simple reason that a superintelligent entity will already have thought of that possibility and taken steps to prevent it. And it will do that not because it “wants to stay alive” but because it is pursuing whatever objective we gave it and knows that it will fail if it is switched off. We can no more “just switch it off” than we can beat AlphaGo (the world-champion Go-playing program) just by putting stones on the right squares.Anselm's argument in Chapter 2 can be summarized as follows:[23]

It is a conceptual truth (or, so to speak, true by definition) that God is a being than which none greater can be imagined.
God exists as an idea in the mind.
A being that exists as an idea in the mind and in reality is, other things being equal, greater than a being that exists only as an idea in the mind.
Thus, if God exists only as an idea in the mind, then we can imagine something that is greater than God (that is, a being-than-which-none-greater-can-be-imagined that does exist).
But we cannot imagine something that is greater than God (for it is a contradiction to suppose that we can imagine a being greater than the being-than-which-none-greater-can-be-imagined.)
Therefore, God exists.

Black's knight is on c6; his rook is on d7; and his queen is on f6. White just played Qa7+!!, which will lead to the following continuation: 1. ...Nxa7 2. Nb6+ Kb8 3. Nxd7+ Kc7 4. Cultural Sensitivity and Expression
It’s essential to approach topics like facesitting and fart games with cultural sensitivity, recognizing that what one culture finds amusing or acceptable, another might not. Brazil, with its Carnival and rich cultural heritage, showcases a blend of openness and playfulness that can be unique. However, the specific combination of Brazilian culture with facesitting and fart games doesn’t point to a distinct, culturally significant phenomenon but rather to the global nature of sexual expression and humor.
Activity	Description
Facesitting	A form of erotic play involving one person sitting on another's face.
Fart Games	Humorous activities or competitions related to flatulence.

On the other hand, the League of Left-handed Plumbers is focusing its lobbying efforts on the No Tax on Tips Act. This bipartisan legislation, introduced by Senator Ted Cruz, aims to allow taxpayers to deduct up to $25,000 in tips from their federal tax returns. The League supports this bill as it could provide significant financial relief to plumbers who often receive tips as part of their income. However, they are also aware of the potential negative impacts, such as reduced federal revenues and the risk of making low-income workers ineligible for certain benefits.
