Last night, I was awarded the 2026 Outstanding Educator of the Year from the Daughters of the America Revolution. To be honored this early in my career is a testament to the dedication I’ve tried to put in the last five years. This award is dedicated to all my students: past, present, and future.

KILLING PEOPLE IS NOT “UNLAWFUL” ENOUGH?!

It is a wild thing, especially because my students and I were just there.

My favorite books that I read in 2025.

I am so proud, scared, and excited to announce that I’m publishing my first book! This is my first, and it certainly will not be my last. I cannot wait for this venture and for you all to meet my dear Eleanor. Each copy is sold for $20 and you can message me if you’d like to purchase one.

I’m a bit late to the party, but WEAPONS is one of the best horror films I’ve seen in a long time. It’s gritty, packed with suspense, and some superb acting thrown in to the mix. If you only watch one horror film this season, watch this. You won’t regret it.

My dog passed away last week and it is hard to believe she is still gone. She was only three years old. We named her Willow because like the tree, the sad nature of her deformities never outshined her beauty and grace.

It was worth every penny.

I’ve read THE HOBBIT many times before and listened to many iterations of it, but Andy Serkis adds such a unique flair it becomes new again. Not just because he is Gollum, but his cadence, delivery, and ability to tell a story is unlike any other. On to the Fellowship (again)!

BETWEEN TWO FIRES, by Christopher Buehlman: This is one of the most brilliant books I’ve read in quite awhile. It is worth your time.

Yup, it’s time to watch the film with awful facial hair but incredible acting. It’s been awhile.

Today is the 162nd anniversary of Little Round Top where Chamberlain and the 20th Maine (as well as many other regiments) defended themselves with bayonets. One of the true heroics of the Civil War. A really good biography of him was done by Ronald C. White and is required reading.

“…I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means.” —JA to AA, July 3, 1776

“The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more…..

In case you need clarification, Pierce was NOT Native American, and spent no time near the Olympics. But don’t worry, AI has our backs.

On June 19, 1865 Military Order No 3 was brought to west-Texas by General Granger to enforce Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. While slavery wasn’t formally abolished until December of 1865, Juneteenth is celebrated as the end of slavery and freedom for millions of Americans.

When our ancestors die, so do all their memories. As guardians of the past, we have a responsibility to hold a place for recollection. No matter how dry or exciting the story; no matter the depth of details, we must remember them before they are just letters and photographs.

For the last unit of my Modern World History course, I’m teaching two modern conflicts (Israel-Palestine & Russia-Ukraine) and providing context to current events. I hope it encourages them to pay closer attention. Today they learned about the Holomodor, and they had a lot of questions...

He finished his book FIVE days before his death, and the book ended up with nearly 350,000 preorders. In about three years, Julia Grant made about $450,000 from her husband’s memoirs.

110

Ethan Healey @ethanhealey.com · 10/05/2025

Grant never really wanted to write his story, but felt that if it kept his family financially stable, it was worth a shot. He spent day and night writing, and wrote as fast as he could because his cancer got worse.

Ethan Healey @ethanhealey.com · 10/05/2025

Grant’s dear friend, Mark Twain (author of Tom Sawyer, among many others), was a publisher and expert marketer of books. Twain believed that if Grant wrote about his time in the military, he could craft it with an appeal to Civil War veterans.

I am now the proud owner of a first edition two volume set of General Ulysses S. Grant’s memoirs. Grant was a general during the American Civil War, and his book is arguably one of the best perspectives we have. It is one of the most important books in American history.

John Adams demanded that only “honest and wise Men” occupy the home. While that has not been the case, seeing the house reminded me this Republic is much larger than a single man. Ben Franklin wrote that “we got a Republic,” but “only if you can keep it.” We will and we must. (See alt texts)

Another picture of the White House with my head peeking below. This is a trend I’ve done with some famous things to show that I was really there with my head, mostly my hair, peeking out.

The Adams quote is from a letter sent to his wife, Abigail, on November 2, 1800. He goes on to say that he doesn’t want to describe the rest of the home because she should inspect it for herself. He only calls the house itself “habitable,” and wishes for her to come as soon as she can.

The Franklin quote is from the journal of James McHenry (MD delegate) who kept minutes and discussions at the Constitutional Convention. This was in reply to a question from Elizabeth Powel, who was a wealthy aristocrat in Philadelphia. While not at the convention, she wanted to know whether this new United States was a Republic or Monarchy. Franklin’s quote is his response.

As I gazed at who lives within the White House, I reflected on the idea that it was never meant to be known by its color, or its former name, the Executive Mansion. It was, and always has been, the People’s House. This gave me comfort, because it is, in effect, our home.

This is a photo of the White House taken from afar on a school trip with some of my students. The American flag stands tall above the home with a POW MIA flag below it.

As I reflected at this building, I couldn’t help but think of January 6. How this one building is the shadow of nearly 250 years of history. So many cracks, many repairs, and so much more to be done. But it still stands.

A picture of the United States Capitol building on the back drop of a bright blue sky with a flag on the right signaling that the House of Reps were in session at the time. Green grass is below.

For those curious, our capitol is still standing and it’s gorgeous.

Colleges, universities, and secondary institutions all across the world are defunding Humanities programs. It’s up to us to continue the conversation that they are just as vital to our lives as any other program. Humanities are part of who we are. In fact, it is all we are.

One of my favorite pieces of literature is George Orwell’s book review of Hitler’s Mein Kampf. Lots of notable quotes here, as Orwell annihilates the man. Unfortunately, as always, he heeds many warnings. “If he were killing a mouse he would know how to make it seem like a dragon.”

I’m diving into this one tonight! I know it’s been out for a bit, but I’ve been so preoccupied with other research. I finally have the time, and something tells me I’m about to be angry and fascinated.

The book cover of Ned Blackhawk’s THE REDISCOVERY OF AMERICA: NATIVE PEOPLES AND THE UNMAKING OF US HISTORY. It features a pale background with feathers along the side. It is stamped with a “National Book Award Winner” sticker.

In honor of Black History Month, I’d like to highlight James Baldwin. His influence on myself (and the rest of the world) is embedded into our societies. Baldwin fought for the preservation of sanity and fought against injustice. Baldwin proved that dissenting was a patriotic act. We can too.

James Baldwin is sitting inside on a white chair, staring up at with a cigarette in his right hand. He wears jewelry and a floral pattern shirt. The photo itself is in black and white.
