Manchester's students are leaving in their droves, but the uni is betting big
There's a huge plan to transform the area
000
Ethan Davies @ethandavies.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
Another factor will be it's hard to think of a plot of land big enough that's available for the uni to redevelop closer to campus (especially given the Fallowfield-Oxford Rd bus route is v quick, usually 20 mins tops)
100
Ethan Davies @ethandavies.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
It's therefore worth asking why the uni is doing this if the trend is students heading away from M14. They say there's still really strong demand to live in Fallowfield, with 'nearly 43pc of applicants in 2021/22' making it their first choice
100
Ethan Davies @ethandavies.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
At the same time, the uni is investing millions in its Fallowfield campus. It's demolishing much-loved halls from the 50s and 60s, including Owens Park Tower (my first home in Mcr) to make way for 29 lower-rise blocks in five neighbourhoods
100
Ethan Davies @ethandavies.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
More and more, students are choosing to live closer to the Oxford Road campuses, and many are heading to the city centre - numbers in town jumped 42% from 2016-22
100
Ethan Davies @ethandavies.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
Most of you will know the area is Fallowfield, which is home to UoM's huge halls of residence campus. It's also home to a plethora of HMOs many students live in in their 2nd/3rd years But that's changing.

Ethan Davies @ethandavies.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
🧵👨‍🎓 For generations, Manchester's students have called one particular part of the city home a lot more than others. Now they're leaving in their droves - a 20% fall in five years. But the uni is betting big on its traditional heartland. Why? ⬇️ www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater...
