I just donated to The Grind’s legal defence. Lawsuits like this are about shutting down journalism, not rectifying mistakes. We can’t let subjects of accurate reporting bully outlets into removing coverage.

This looks to me like Rhodesian Brushstroke. A distinctive camo pattern used by the white supremacist government of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the 70s. It has since become popular with modern extremists as a covert signifier.

Big weekend at the CAJ awards! Honoured to win gold in the scoop category, beating out the legendary Robert Fife! Ricochet won two awards last night, and two awards at last week’s Digital Publishing Awards, for a total of four national journalism awards out of six nominations.

Here’s my speech after winning Gold in the scoop category at the CAJ awards tonight. I dedicated it to @jonthompson.bsky.social, facing retaliation from Thunder Bay police for award-winning reporting, as well as the fearless Jerome Turner, indomitable @dreahouston.bsky.social & my parents.

Jerome Turner and I just won Gold in the scoop category at the CAJ awards! Beating out the legend Bob Fife! (Somehow!) I dedicated it to Jon Thompson — who we reported this week has been facing retaliation from the Thunder Bay Police for his reporting. Read here: ricochet.media/media/thunde...

Lovely morning at the ACTRA Awards media breakfast in Montreal. Here to celebrate my dad, Kirwan Cox, who is receiving the Victor Knight Community Builder Award for his decades of work helping to secure funding for English-language production in Quebec.

He claims that although he created phishing links on his site, and sent them to Bourrie and numerous accounts on Reddit (the things he got caught doing), he has nothing to do with the email address that sent the same links to journalists. Coincidentally, the email’s owner sounds exactly like Jesse.

I was asked to complete the @rsf.org World Press Freedom Index questionnaire for Canada. Here’s what I wrote at the end. Police attempts to exclude journalists from the site of arrests, particularly of Indigenous Peoples, represents the most significant threat to press freedom in Canada.

I’m hung over after last night’s tragic Blue Jays loss, but I just voted! Our city is at stake. Please make the time to get out and vote. If you want my two cents, it’s anyone but Soraya. Her policies will make life so much harder for renters and young people in the city.

After an amazing live-taping of Adrian Harewood’s podcast last night, we’re back today for the Future of Independent Media summit organized by Press Progress. First panel is on AI in and for newsrooms, on the lovely Carleton campus.

Last year, former cabinet minister Chris Alexander made the absurd claim (behind parliamentary privilege) that David Pugliese was a Russian spy. Tonight, Pugliese shared the CAJ’s top award from president Brent Jolly. “If David is guilty of anything, it is being a thorn in the side of power.”

Came across this sign in a uniform supply store that serves exclusively law enforcement and military/navy/air force. A traditionally right-of-centre crowd. I thought it was an interesting example of how anti-Trump nationalism really cuts across political lines. And why it’s hurting Poilievre.

This is a really interesting, and genuine, town hall. I’ll have a campaign notebook tomorrow with details, but in the meantime enjoy a few photos.

I’m here at the Malaspina Theatre, on the campus of Vancouver Island University, for the Nanaimo-Ladysmith candidates’ town hall! As you’ll notice if you squint at the nameplates on the tables, Conservative candidate Tamara Kronis will not be joining us. As is often the case with CPC candidates.

I’m out on the BC coast, reporting on a number of close races that could determine the fates of parties like the NDP and Greens. Even though I am *too old for this shit*, I have started a TikTok account and will be posting campaign trail stuff this week. I’m @ethanocox

Jagmeet Singh and Laurel Collins serving up ice cream at an NDP campaign event in Victoria this evening. Big crowd, at least 150 people. A lot of energy.

Big NDP energy in Victoria, where Jagmeet Singh just arrived for a campaign event with Laurel Collins. At least 150 people here for an evening of door knocking with their candidate.

I’m in Victoria this evening for a campaign event with Jagmeet Singh and Laurel Collins. The crowd awaiting them is quite big. 75-100 people I’d say.

I’ve got to duck out, but the debate is still going strong and the crowd is all still here. It’s been a nice example of local democracy, and I wish more young folks would participate in these things. You learn a lot! Bye for now! This evening I’ll be in Victoria with Jagmeet. So stay tuned!

I was able to catch up with the fellow in the mask. He’s part of a queer community group called Victoria Pups, and they are trying to get photos with all the federal leaders in their masks. Here he is with May, and with Jagmeet Singh earlier this month. He may be the youngest adult in the room!

Elizabeth May talks about living in a poly-crisis world, and the need to face down the forces of darkness — aka fascism — at this all-candidates meeting in Saanich.

“I pledge to you that if you do me the honour of re-electing me… I will work non-stop in the interests of this planet, of this community and of every single one of my employers — who are all of you.” May gets the loudest ovation. Liberal David Beckham (really!) a close second.

NDP candidate Colin Plant asks the audience who remains undecided. Only a dozen or so hands shot up, out of around 150-200 people in the room. Many minds already made up. Meanwhile, this guy just showed up with a mask and squeaky pink toy. Will there be a stunt?

Just spoke to a couple in their thirties sitting at the back of the hall. They don’t usually vote strategically, and they have voted for May in the past. They tell me this time the decision will be made at the last minute, and based on who they think is the strategic choice to block the CPC.

I’m at Saanichton fairgrounds in Saanich and Gulf Islands this afternoon for an all candidates debate. This is Elizabeth May’s riding, and CPC candidate Cathie Ounsted may be her main competition, but she’s not expected to attend, in line with a general CPC reticence to participate in forums.

This evening, at the debate, I stood up to Ezra Levant. I told him the truth: his three ring circus prevented us from asking the leaders questions on behalf of the public. Now he’s fundraising off of the mess he made. Let’s raise some money for real journalism instead. ricochet.media/donate/

Before debate started we got locked out due to a security concern. When we got in, it turned out issue was Ezra Levant fighting with reporters and getting into a back and forth. The Rebel gamed the commission, and literally have a dozen people in this room. Now they got the Q&A cancelled.

"I think it's a step in the right direction, but it has to be followed with action, and that action has to trickle down to the officers on the front lines." A great CBC story here on the RCMP apologizing for violating our press freedom, and arbitrarily detaining Jerome. www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7466872

This incident, along with similar unlawful detentions of journalists at the other blockades, kicked off a fight between press and media over access to observe police actions that has been ongoing ever since. This policy of media exclusion has been used almost exclusively in Indigenous communities.

Turner was repeatedly refused access to a sprawling exclusion zone designed to prevent media from reporting on police actions, prevented from doing his job and detained for eight hours in two locations. He would win one of the country’s top journalism awards for his “moral courage” in this moment.

Let’s back up. This all happened five years ago, in northern BC. Blockades were erected by Wet’suwet’en people to block construction of a pipeline on their territory. Over a few days in February, the RCMP raided three blockades. Turner was present to cover one of those raids. I was his editor.
