Structural decline: what happened to Japan’s iconic buildings? – in pictures
Japan once had a reputation for statement architecture – yet many buildings have been torn down since 2000. A new book reminds us of their futuristic beauty

『和食人類学』は、ゲリラ出版でしか成立しなかった note.com/tamachangg/n...

Experimenting with playing methods is just as important as experimenting with timbre. If the playing method remains the same, the sound will not be much different from FM synthesis.

Needless to say, novelty is not the issue here. Anything created with the intention of being new quickly becomes outdated. In that sense, even the label 'contemporary music' begins to seem questionable. The only option is to create what one personally deems to be good.

As for me—what is my own situation? Since I am fundamentally incapable of belonging to any organization, I have no choice but to do what I can at my own pace. By any reasonable estimate, I likely have only about 10 years left to remain active at this pace, given my mental and physical stamina.

In fact, Hisaishi brilliantly pulled off a performance of a piece that people had said was impossible to play with only a few days of rehearsal. I suspect this was because he generously poured the money he had earned from soundtracks into securing the orchestra members' time.

Japanese audiences will applaud enthusiastically if the performance is superb, no matter how poor the composition itself may be. While this is not a bad thing in itself, it does somewhat dampen the mood. It makes me wonder what exactly they are responding to.

I could never say this directly to my fellow professionals. Still, I feel that—especially over the last few years—the atmosphere surrounding the genre has increasingly become one of music intended for a specific class of people.

Moreover, has the world of contemporary music really seen anything all that novel since the turn of this century?

Another point concerns the event that just took place here—where a composer writes a score, the performers play it, and the audience sits and simply listens to the music—and whether such a format is NOT outdated.

First, to establish the current context, we should acknowledge that a Fluxus-style concert—featuring works such as Stockhausen’s Aus den sieben Tagen and pieces by Yoko Ono, and consisting entirely of text scores—took place just about a week ago. I did not attend the concert myself, however.
