Douglas Rain as HAL 9000. As much as I would enjoy the Bronx accent of Martin Balsam, the Canadian Mr. Rain was the perfect choice. OTOH, on set HAL's lines were apparently run by an assistant with a strong Cockney accent and part of me would love to hear a HAL that sounds like Michael Caine.
