Still patiently waiting to be "left behind" by AI rather than it chasing me across every damn space like a slasher in a low budget flick.

comments on James Mickens' talks and essays are always a bit looney-tunes-y, half the people going all elmer fudd in there and half too busy laughing/crying

Back in 2022, my at-the-time workplace decided to sponsor folks for AWS certifications. To get people to start studying for the test, they asked that folks pick one of the many services or configurations you can/might/will end up using on AWS and do a 1-hour group discussion on it.

crazy that devs are saying stuff like AI is the future of coding. so the future of coding is paying an evil corporation a $500/month subscription for tokens ?? seriously?? you are sleepwalking into a cyberpunk dystopia you fucking morons

Waiting for someone to use the new Claude model for the one thing nobody can object against — develop a working jailbreak for the Kindle Paperwhite 11th Gen on 5.19

As someone moving back and forth between skeptical user and vicious hater of AI workflows, it has been an interesting few months now since people have started to talk about this outcome of the AI revolution (derogatory). What did folks expect if not this? Gotta get our hands dirty to get good.

The New York Times Got Played By A Telehealth Scam And Called It The Future Of AI
Since the New York Times published its semi-viral big profile of Medvi last week — the "AI-powered" telehealth startup that it breathlessly described as a "$1.8 billion company" supposedly run by just two brothers — I've had multiple friends and family members send me the article with some version of the same message: "Can you believe this guy built a billion-dollar company with AI?

It was only a matter of time, of course, and I might even be too late to notice it, but people have begun to add AI-generated text to TVTropes.

Lately starting to become aware of how much work stuff I actually do sort of on autopilot where I’m not consciously thinking about what message I’m typing or code I’m writing or such. Gets jarring when I’m doing this stuff while on a call because I see what I’ve done but don’t remember how.

That new clicks keyboard accessory isn’t quite the same as what I was thinking about here but it’s close enough And who knows, maybe we’ll get something like the n97 keyboard next year if the clicks folks manage to make it til then

Put my phone in a jacket pocket I don’t normally use, forgot where I put it, and panicked for a full minute despite being able to feel its weight in the jacket. All in a public place. Is this what being 31 is supposed to be like?

folks who call LLM-generated software homemade or home-baked or whatever ought to consider calling it drop-shipped after looking at how much they pay for it and the way they depend on model peddlers not effing things up without telling them

Been on a streak of reading the City Watch series of Discworld books this week. Just finished Night Watch and I don’t know what to do with myself, which is how good books make me feel. What a great story. Love it.

struck suddenly by the realization that the very first thing I ever did on a computer with internet access was download more clipart in powerpoint (2003 maybe?) so i could make funny animations in a computer lessons class organized by a school that was run by a charitable foundation

funny how siri is the only voice assistant app this works anymore for because all the rest of them can respond to this question and might soon try to shove an advert in their answer

More and more convinced that the iPad mini is the only device that comes close to the ideal form factor for an all-round general purpose personal computing device. If only this had actual cellular functionality (and maybe better cameras) I’d be glad to use it instead of a phone full-time.

Thought about buying an iPad mini for my birthday, but somehow not convinced that buying it would be the best way to spend that much money. Now I'm thinking about what other gadget I could buy to scratch my itch for a new toy. It'd have been easier if more things officially shipped to India.

Didn’t sleep enough yesterday, did a fair bit of driving today, and then had coffee late at night. So now every time I try to close my eyes and sleep I wind up imagining a very vivid situation where I get into a horrible car crash.

Going to be a bit crude here but the disconnect between management and ground-level folks when it comes to the conversation about (effective) use of GenAI might vanish if the latter were allowed to call out the former for being stupid fucks by actually calling them "stupid fucks". Might help a bit.

I haven't seen Stranger Things so I feel very concerned about that bald kid with superpowers because she has a nosebleed in like half of all promo material I've seen and that can't possibly be good for her

As if the "Windows will be an agentic OS" nonsense wasn't enough, Microsoft has deprecated Intellicode and marked GitHub Copilot as the successor. I imagine this will go very well in the long run and will not have any net negative effects for their users.

been kinda sad that after all these years of MagSafe on iPhones nobody’s thought about making a keyboard accessory styled after the Nokia n97 keyboard just imagine the possibilities

Signing out of all the social media because this is a nonsensical time sink 99% of the time and the 1% is just not worth it. I’m going to try to take up a better hobby.

Suddenly remembered I used to sneak a pocket radio to school when I was in seventh grade, around 2006-07. It ran on 2xAAA batteries, was about the size of three pencils side-by-side. it’s such a strong memory. I can almost smell the winter air. I wish I had pictures.

I'm sure that, back when I was 25, there were days when I started out on five hours of sleep and did a lot of driving (motorcycling) around and then felt like my heart was going to give up from that more spicy type of exhaustion. But now I'm 30 and every time this happens it feels like the first.

Rotting in bed and thinking about that one day six years ago when I once hammered down a quarter bottle of Benadryl with two black coffees after lunch, worked til 7 and went on a date with a really wonderful gal who dumped me a couple of months later. I shouldn’t have gotten out of bed that day.

I bought a Macbook Air a few days ago, the base variant with M4. I've used an M1 and have been using an M4 for the last couple of months, which were both for work and so mostly remained permanently plugged in on my desk, and so I've never really appreciated how crazy good Apple has made these.

Tenet, the Nolan movie, really had a lot of things going for it. It had a good conceit, good plot, actually a lot of substance where it mattered, but god, did the editing suck. It's done like so many video tutorials on YouTube - there's barely any breathing room in the conversations at all

Microsoft copilot is wasted effort. They should work on real features, like giving us the Word 95 UI back.
