Advocacy for air conditioning is as shallow and dishonest as that of electric cars. A last ditch attempt at keeping the current unsustainable way of life unchanged with a measure inherently limited to a minority elite which probably knows it and can't care as long as it can get away with it.

So many incredibly obvious questions around the AI collective stupidity phenomenon and yet no single media dares to asks them because they are all terrified of IT companies. First one: what data is actually stored in all those data centers that is suddenly so huge that we need hundreds of them?

How many debates and arguments that have been had over what "religion" is and does are broad enough to include any possible religion rather than merely the Islam-Christianism-Judaism block? The making of religion synonymous with the block is a rather insidious propaganda tool.

One does not need to be a government hating libertarian to dislike subsidies to both food and fuels. Because they hide the actual availability of the resources, subsidies provide the worst incentives and encourage the worst behavior of careless and wasteful consumption.

The True Industrialism preachers are fond of claiming the modern, decaying western system is not industrialization but financialization, but in hindsight, it is a Not a True Scotsman attempt at defending Industrialism from a flaw inherent to it.

Lots of stuff happening here. It goes without saying that fuel subsidies are an abomination done with short term populism motives. Either the subsidies have to end, the government has to create money by borrowing inflating everything else or fuel runs out. www.independent.co.uk/news/bolivia...

I'm baffled to find out that the Club of Rome guys turned out to be, if not overpopulation deniers, overpopulation squeamishes. "Yes there's overpopulation but we don't need to do even lay a finger on it because our totally empirical extrapolations of birth rate trends show it will 'solve itself'".

Cold take: there is no single problem the world faces that needs to be solved by adding more computation. Panopticon level monitoring and surveillance with ability to kill anyone at the press of a button, is the problem that additional data centers CREATE and BRING into existence.

Random language suggestion: Rather than using the phrase "kick the can along the road" to describe the cowardly choice to continue flawed policies, use "build up the jenga tower". A can can be kicked along the road indefinitely, a jenga tower is doomed to fall, more sooner than later.

Apparently we are supposed to feel bad about the disruption in plastics production because it will impact food packaging but I won't shed a tear for it. Good riddance. If anything, plastic is a enables the needed distribution of centralized food production. Less plastic, nearer food production.

I have seen here live how farmers choose to grow huge alfalfa monocultures with absolute disregard of the unsustainable water consumption for the place for the sole reason that it is one crop they can grow and harvest without ever getting off the tractor. Zero sympathy for diesel tractor farmers.

So far I have not had a instinctive opposition to the basic idea of commerce and trade but, the more I think it, commerce introduces a irresistible temptation to overexploit the local environment beyond the local needs. How many environmentalists are fully commited to the abolishment of commerce?

In retrospect, given the intrinsic nature of the monetary system, the voting booth being presented as the one and only possible expression of democracy was nothing but a Trojan horse introduced by oligarchs to ensure they could reduce all the people wills to a few ones which could always be bribed.

Nothing to lament if the war actually triggers the collapse. Better sooner than later. Better to be the first generation that gets to face it than yet another one that kicked the can along the road and got to get away with it by dying. It is only but ethically fair.

The worst dystopian future is already in the process of becoming a reality: central power having the ability to anonymously kill with extreme ease. If this is what technology like solar panels and lithium batteries will be used first and foremost, why wouldn't I prefer it all to collapse?

Pretty good depiction of a fallacy surrounding the denial of physical limits to growth: to conclude that, if zero-sum behaviour derives from physical limits, then such limits must not exist. Tough talk: Cuba should throw all electric appliances through the window, and the whole house too if it can't work without them. Clinging to electricity is an addiction to something that will be gone sooner or later. More dignifying to let it go. The rest of the world will follow.

"Why celebrating the oil disruption when it's going to cause fertilizer and food scarcity?" It will be deplorable indeed, but when it is bound to happen sooner or later, and when the system is never going to sacrifice its cruelty and sumptous luxuries first, then it becomes something to embrace.

Enshittification of electronics is by now well known, but I doubt it deserves to be combatted. Industrialization is the actual path to 1984, so electronics becoming clunky and unreliable is far better than becoming better and infallible since they will be working for the oligarchy, not the people.

After reading enough of finance, I'm completely convinced that the whole FIRE sector exists only in a zero-sum relationship with the all other productive sectors. For the financial sector to win, the productive sectors can only lose. Along its cult of Growth™, it is a true source of evil.

The ultimate goal of conservatism and right ideology is the perpetual establishment of caste, the upper position of their chosen by divine, unchallenged decree. This goal is, of course, utterly repellent. To advance it they become duplicitous, liars and often engage in the motte-and-bailey fallacy.
