So you’re a writer? Of course there are jokes?

My side of town tends towards being a little cheaper, but even the nearby rotten Robbie is 5.89, 6.09, 6.29, or god forbid you want diesel: 8.59

This is a hot topic in the bay area Costco Facebook group. Pretty much everyone who can go there, does. The closest one to my house is, as of 8 minutes ago 5.45 for regular and 5.85 for premium.

I’ve seen some folks say their newer manuals are better. This one is Dora’s loft. I bought it at Michael’s a few months ago but I don’t actually know how recent a kit it is

Esmerel @esmerel.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Similar but not the same. But I bet they copied the manual

Is that Cathy’s garden house? It looks like it. I could definitely swear I’ve tried to follow those exact instructions.

Esmerel @esmerel.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
And then: cut the fabric into two pieces as shown! Now, I know what the numbers mean, that’s part of the initial instructions before you start. Does this note that it’s the *other* piece of fabric? Nope. If you made the mistake of stacking the two pieces for the earlier step, you’re boned.
More fabric cutting instructions.

Insert the silk cotton! It’s not silk, nor is it cotton. However, this might be another translation/dialect issue. The actual problem is… was this listed in the parts for this piece? NOPE. So now you have to go hunting for it while you’re probably dealing with glue on your hands.
Instructions for stuffing the fabric so it becomes an actual cushion.

Esmerel @esmerel.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
These ones are ok. Ish. - I’m gonna let “turn over the fabric” slide as either a dialect or translation error. Though, there’s no red line on the fabric, this should say “like the red line” or “along the edge of the fabric.”
Instructions for properly gluing and turning the fabric inside out.

Esmerel @esmerel.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Now, we “cut the bottom”. The sides are already split. Why did we not just cut on the already split side of the fabric so we didn’t need this instruction at all?
Instructions describing how to cut the bottom of the fabric.

Esmerel @esmerel.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
So you cut the fabric out using the pattern piece. Note that we can make a reasonable guess that we need two pieces for the front and back but the instructions sure don’t say “fold one piece over, lengthwise” or how to place the pattern. It’s just “cut the pattern”.
A photo showing how to cut the fabric. The bottom of the pattern piece is placed on the fold.

Here we have an example of why you have technical writers. Behold, my book nook instructions. This is the parts list.
This is the list of parts for a “sofa”. It’s about a dozen pieces of various types.

2. Yes. It’s a fair assessment. If if they, technically, don’t participate, they’re ok with people who do. Which is exactly the same in my book

And it’s far from the *first* time this has happened to someone. I can see it once and then anyone who has anyone who understands anything about deployment and backups? They should have taken steps. The fact that this keeps happening? Those companies deserve to fail.

We’re having to teach AI how to do our jobs, instead of helping users accomplish tasks. The only “productivity boost” I’m getting is that since I basically never actually get the info I need, I ask the bot to find and read the code so I don’t have to wait for someone else to answer me.

Esmerel @esmerel.bsky.social · 24/04/2026
I can not tell you how I feel this in my bitter, black soul. I have spent the last week teaching an AI to do shit that people with a fundamental grasp of English understand. Today I had to mediate between 2 agents that were fighting about placement of information. Spoiler: both places were wrong.

It is f***ing nuts right now. "You MUST use AI in your job, by the way we're going to replace you with AI, we don't actually know what your job is or what you really do," it's like a magic circle of crap.

That is definitely true, it’s just the local chain most people recognize, I think? Otherwise people are looking more at their own neighborhood independents. This wouldn’t have blown up so much if it was a single shop or two.

Esmerel @esmerel.bsky.social · 17/04/2026
I don’t know if you live here, but that’s basically been the sentiment. Philz has been the place people go because they don’t wanna support the big chains. Taking the flags down was a bad idea in general but it was -especially- going to go over badly here.

Purity culture, which lets be honest, has been plaguing the US in some form or another since the beginning, warps sex, making it violent or forbidden or something to be used against people. Sex, if you enjoy it, is simply part of being human. Moralizing sex fucks people up.
