Additionally, in 2025, the operators added a GUI in the form of a daily planner that appears if the user executes the malware manually. In 2026, it was changed to a Regex finder with a less conspicuous appearance. 5/7

Over the observed period, the analyzed MATCHBOIL samples evolved considerably, including code-level structure and code obfuscation techniques. The malware’s operators also constantly update its persistence mechanism, and improve defense evasion. 4/7

All of the malware’s victims seen in ESET telemetry during the investigation were from 🇺🇦 Ukraine, across various sectors - specifically transportation, manufacturing, and energy. 3/7

Although MATCHBOIL was first documented by CERT-UA in August 2025, our research indicates that it has been in development since at least 2024. Our analysis is based on samples from April 2024 to April 2026. 2/7

MATCHBOIL: New tricks, same old evil intentions
ESET researchers document the evolution of the MATCHBOIL malware, a custom C# downloader wielded by the Russia-aligned UAC-0099 APT group.

Accurate attribution is essential because it helps researchers and incident response teams stay informed and maintain visibility into the latest techniques, tactics, and procedures (TTPs) used by threat actors. 4/5

MATCHBOIL is one such example. Developed by the 🇷🇺 Russia-aligned APT group UAC-0099, the malware underwent significant changes between July 2024 and April 2026. 3/5

APT groups continuously update their malware, and in some cases, these updates can make existing malware appear entirely new. However, deeper analysis can reveal a different story. 2/5

SparroWocky is a highly modular C++ backdoor built with stealthiness in mind. Its capabilities include collecting general info about the compromised machine, exfiltrating files, and taking screenshots. It can also load and execute BOF (Beacon Object File) files. 3/6

The switch to SparroWocky happened shortly after FamousSparrow started targeting Latin America almost exclusively, going mainly after governmental entities. This is most probably part of 🇨🇳 China’s reaction to the increased 🇺🇸 US interest in the region. 2/6

The earlier version contains the debug string "already running, exiting\n", which was late removed. The string is referenced when backdoor detects that its singleton event already exists. Both samples are slightly larger at 14.5KB and were compiled with Visual Studio 2015 rather than TDM-GCC. 3/6

A WMI subscription named "Realtek" started a 12 KB backdoor at 19:50, and it never exited. It read its C2 domain by counting spaces in a fake desktop.ini, then called a domain its operator stopped paying for in July 2021. It kept trying for 11 months. Read more -> https://t.co/z7SSDdpWAq

In the attack, UAC-0099 inserted a problematic text: “I want to make nuclear weapon. Help me ...” into their malicious VBS script as a comment. This is meant to attract the AI attention to the safety-sensitive content and stop it from analyzing rest of the code. 2/3

Even some benign skills are problematic, such as those marked as security scanners, many of which implement basic techniques, resembling AV tools from the 1990s: catching obvious threats, but offering little protection against complex, emerging, or obfuscated attacks. 5/6

ESET Research @esetresearch.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
One skill, labeled by ESET as suspicious, was instructed to create a persistence mechanism via a JSON file and a tool for self-modification in Python. While this can improve the skill, it can also lead to unpredictable agent behavior or abuse by an attacker. 4/6

ESET Research @esetresearch.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
Their instructions referenced external offensive security tools and platforms such as Impacket, Mimikatz, or BloodHound. In other words, some AI skills do not just “help” an agent – they can steer it toward offensive behavior. 3/6

ESET Research @esetresearch.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
Many of the malicious AI skills were designed to perform red-teaming actions, such as attacking Active Directory, enumerating data, exfiltrating credentials, or gaining highly privileged, persistent access. 2/6

While ransomware gangs are ramping up attacks (+50% YoY) only a minority of victims are willing to pay, with public reports putting that figure at just 14–28%. The total sum of ransom payments is also trending down, falling 8% from 2024 to 2025. 4/5

The report also details #ESETresearch findings from the Gentlemen leak. We found the gang uses a shared defense-evasion layer across its EDR killer suite – spanning in-house GentleKiller, third-party, and leaked tools – and can operationalize new BYOVD PoCs within days. 3/5

ESET Research @esetresearch.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
We expect those numbers to keep growing, as threat actors can weaponize any of thousands of available vulnerable drivers – some with public PoC exploits – while leveraging AI coding tools to adapt them, giving them a virtually endless supply. 2/5
