Note on household analogies.

That states don't tend to retire or die, or pay off their debts entirely, is one way national debt is not like household or personal debt, not like a credit card for example, and why analogies with household debt, or suggestions the government must 'pay off or 'pay down' the debt can cause intense debate. Clearly, pithy, accessible metaphors are valuable to journalists and audiences. And 'paying off is a tempting phrase even to those who know the arguments because it seems to express the idea there must be some degree of discipline over debt, even for a state. We just used a household analogy by saying mortgage debt equal to 100% of income would not usually induce fear. But again, it helps to know that household analogies are dangerous territory, intensely contested, and can easily mislead.

Note on hype.

"An attack by a single Iranian nuclear missile could have a catastrophic impact on the United States by causing an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) over a portion of the country," he said. "Such an attack could quickly turn a third or more of the United States back to a 19th century level of development. Electrical transformers and switching stations would fall. Without electricity, hospitals would fails, water and sewage services would fail, gas stations would be unable to provide petroleum, trucks would not be able to distribute food supplies, and essential services would rapidly disintegrate."

Gingrich said "this is not idle speculation, but taken from the consensus findings of nine distinguished scientists who authored the Report of the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack, which was delivered to the Congress on June 22, 2004, the same day the 9-11 commission report was published."

Gingrich pointed out that such a sneak attack – especially if launched from a merchant ship at sea – could have the added benefit of deniability by Iran.

"Contemplating an EMP threat makes more troubling reports that certain Iranian missile tests resulted in missiles that have detonated in flight at or near apogee, which the Iranian press has reported as successful events," explained Gingrich. "Normally, it would be expected that the ability to target specific locations would be the standard for success for ballistic tests. However, if the ability to launch an EMP attack was being tested, detonation at apogee would be the measure of testing success. As noted by the EMP commission, a country with limited nuclear capabilities and few choices as to delivery platforms has only a few options to deliver a deadly blow. An EMP attack would be on such strategy."

The kids won't remember peak Newt.
If combat means living in a ditch, females have biological problems staying in a ditch for 30 days because they get infections and they don't have upper body strength. I mean some do, but they're relatively rare.

"On the other hand, men are basically little piglets, you drop them in the ditch, they roll around in it, it doesn't matter, you know. These things are very real.

"On the other hand, if combat means being on an aegis-class cruiser managing the computer controls for 12 ships and their rockets, a female may again be dramatically better than a male who gets very, very frustrated sitting in a chair all the time because males are biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes.

what was ian saying in october 2024 - the people were protesting wrong (and this is just lies of course)
I wonder if the organisers of those pro-Palestine marches ever wonder how much they gave up. I wonder if they recognise, just even for a moment, what kind of coalition they could have built against Benjamin Netanyahu’s government if they had not tolerated patently anti-semitic rhetoric and behaviour. I wonder if they know how many Jews and non-Jews might have marched alongside them.

Even in the earliest days of the protest movement, when the memory of the October 7th atrocities were still fresh, there wasn't even a trace element of sympathy for those who had been killed. There wasn't the slightest interest, or recognition, of Jewish suffering.

There are people on Bluesky who believe I am “obsessed” with the issue of trans women participating in women’s sports, which is not the case. I am, rather, frustrated by Democrats’ tendency to take a No Compromise With the Electorate Approach to a question that while nuanced, doesn’t require a doctorate to understand and that also involves low stakes compared with other questions related to trans rights.

So I’ve been heartened to see Rob Sand, James Talarico, Amy Acton, and Josh Turek take a more pragmatic approach to this issue. And it’s especially

The government will be hoping the plans - with promises of billions of pounds and thousands of jobs - can help stymie the claims they are mismanaging the economy and stunting growth in the UKMPs and Lords call for new law to address AI threat to human rights

Dumbest people on the planet
Rahm emanuel: I've served in two White Houses and in Congressional leadership, and I can tell you when the last time a CEO or an industry at large asked to be regulated: never. That's what makes Dario's letter so striking — it's an admission that we're driving down a dark, winding road on wet pavement with the headlights off. And where's President Trump? Looks like he nodded off again. It’s time to turn the lights on, put both hands on the wheel, and regain control before it’s too late.

whole thing is hilarious - but I'll pick just one bit:
The risk of insider trading is minimal, especially in relative terms.
Unlike in energy commodities where a single EIA report could swing the outcome, there is little
genuinely decisive and actionable material nonpublic information for the aggregated results of
over 450 elections. Standard market procedures, including KYC, exchange rules, CFTC
regulations, trader prohibitions and market surveillance, are more than sufficient to mitigate this
risk.
The CFTC should not privilege speculative insider trading concerns over real-world data
showing these markets can be offered safely. These concerns are no basis to block a market. How
will the CFTC handle other markets’ insider trading threat–will they prohibit all trading there as
well? CFTC and exchange rules and protections exist for a reason: they work.

this from derek thompson is so funny. 'maybe all the people i follow on twitter were disingenuously arguing against a strawman? much to consider.'
Thompson: I want to re-circle something that you said because I think it’s so important. When I’m on social media, on Twitter, following the arguments among people who are building AI, I’ll often see them make this fact check where they’ll say, “There’s this popular claim about data centers using all of this water, but in fact, data centers use much less water than is commonly assumed.” But that fact check is often assumed to do the job of proving that anti–data center politics is based on a myth. And what your reporting, I think, does so well is it shows that the actual on-the-ground opposition to data centers is so much more complicated than just a single factoid about water use.

Michalinos Zembylas, professor of educational theory at the Open University of Cyprus, and Prof Anoop Nayak, of Newcastle University, were among four external academics chosen to sit on the nine-member panel that unanimously selected Mr Arday in 2022.

Hillary rosen tweet

Someone with courage and credibility ien the Democratic Party needs to stand up and forcefully say that "Gaza" - a complex and painful problem - is NOT the defining issue for the next or any election. People will have differing views but the future of Netanyahu and the West Bank is in the hands of Israeli's. Not Americans (regardless of our military support). Not understanding that in the U.S. means you've lost the plot for our party.
