Great news; amongst the names that were previously missing is that of 7941782 John Dodgson Batty, East Riding Yeomanry, who was wounded in Normandy but died in the UK and is buried in Leeds. I visited his grave in 2021. #Forrard #LestWeForget www.britishnormandymemorial.org/news-story/t...

#OTD 15 April 1917 51488 Pte Clifford Pickard, 2/1st East Riding Yeomanry, died suddenly in hospital in Bridlington aged 18. He had been called up only a month before. He is buried in Bridlington Cemetery #Forrard #ERY #LestWeForget

February 24 marks International War Animals Day. Horses of course played a central role in the history of the East Riding Yeomanry, a cavalry regiment, but donkeys, mules & camels were also used to transport food, water, ammunition & casualties. The story of one ERY animal stands out – Taffy. 1/7

#OTD 22 January 1879 the Battle of Rorke's Drift took place, immortalised in the film Zulu. I was fortunate enough to visit the site, and that of the nearby Battle of Isandlwana, in 2003.

Despite its seemingly consistent style, Burton Constable near Hull boasts a rich and complicated architectural history. The manor was acquired in the thirteenth century by the Constable family, the oldest surviving part, Stephen’s Tower, dates back to King Stephen’s reign in 1/3

Cassel 8/9/2025 strategic hilltop town in Flanders where 145 Brigade with the 1st East Riding Yeomanry attached were surrounded and overwhelmed on the night of 29th/30th May 1940. Disappointingly the plaque commemorating 145 Bde has been removed #Forrard

#OTD 28 Jun 1944 Trooper 7952843 Eric Armstrong East Riding Yeomanry was KIA when the tank in which he was serving as gunner was knocked out. He was 21. Eric Sidney John Armstrong was born on 2 April 1923, the son of Sidney Philip & Mary Armstrong of Epping. 1/4

Remembering #OTD 29 May 1940 the men of the East Riding Yeomanry &145 Bde who were preparing to make their attempt to breakout from Cassel this evening. Few made it to Dunkirk, almost all were KIA or captured, the only escapees being from B Echelon who departed earlier #Forrard
