If a sense of community develops, I'll figure out something. It needs to NOT be centered on attention, for my own comfort. It was always that sense that I *should* conform to the MO of what all social media has become. It was never going to sit easy. We all have to scrape back layers periodically.

For now, the structure is: banal, making stuff, steady state information interest, big picture. See how I use info literacy in everything. ;) No idea what the cadence will be. Weekly is the most frequent I might ever do.

Woke this morning to "the newsletter can be about life and info testing/literacy," rather than "I have written something." It's also another way to communicate with me -- email/response component. Archive shifted to subscriber only (hate the bots). Free. Link in the footer. www.smudgingthebinary.com

no worries. As the traffic went down and things remained linked without a clear connection, I started wondering. :) But by the time I noticed, I figured I was close enough to just follow through.

Yep, picking up on that through logic. But I really appreciate the confirmation without having to dig further. :) Thank you!

So, take care of yourself. I'll still be lurking, but every click I'm going to see as something I have to "clean up" in a few months. I know me, that's enough to curtail my input. ;) The mutuals are where I'm likely to interact.

They do understand the use of feel-good emotions when it comes to marketing; but the bigger they get, the more business seems to start acting like people are here to support them, and not for mutual benefit. Many *leverage* emotions, instead of understanding they *are also* judgements.

The emotional exhaustion helped me pinpoint, too, that attention is emotional work. You know, that "glue" bosses always want to believe doesn't matter, the "soft side" business doesn't believe isn't relevant investment in production.

This is nothing everyone here doesn't understand at some level. But the time break helped me see that -- despite believing it wasn't in my nature to FOMO, it wasn't in my nature to follow the crowd...here I was anyway.

ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
My attention was theirs, and they insisted. It's exhausting to pay that much attention. It's exhausting to be continuously feeling the pressure for performance by people who only care about that little number at the bottom. It's far from everyone. There are people here I actively enjoy.
100
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
I started thinking about who I was actually curious about, and...most of my attention wasn't by consent. It wasn't because I was actively curious, but because people were clamoring. And most of it didn't need my attention *right now*, but if I didn't pay it *right now* it was gone.

ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
My active clicks, my active attention paid, my active thought put in. Not because I was curious, or because they did something remarkable (and, hey, there are some remarkable people here), but because someone decided my attention was required.

Here's what started it: my cat died. loved her so much. and I couldn't stand social media while in the worst of it. it felt like work. it felt like I was just there to stroke someone who didn't care who existed, as long as the number ticked up. Except instead of it being ambient, it was active.

That took a while to un-repost and delete personal posts when they were a certain age. Trying to un-repost and unlike at the same time resulted in more glitches. Consistently picked up the under-click instead of the un-repost. The delete post started acting up, needing multiple tries.

Ok, so deleting old posts is so hard and infrastructure-problematic that it makes it so typing this message took minutes. Is there a solution to put a "cap" on how long my posts stay available, or is it easier to delete the account? If I delete it, do I still need to individually delete each post?

I heard the same thing, small town midwest. I got out with information literacy. It's *why* authoritarians want to curtail and control information. If it's THE ONLY way to be seen anywhere, then when they dismiss your difference as evil, it sticks faster and easier. love your libraries 😉

I'm excited about this one. In-window heat pump. Still expensive, only 2 companies building in category (Midea is the other, both won NYC innovation funding). The 'suffer now or die later' choice is just wrong. See suffering, invest. What's limiting us is the profit story and employment norms.

It's functionally like ARIA, but to expand the system instead of ensure the details can contract to anyone who wants the information. Overkill if it's seen as a button. A step forward if it's seen as a findability layer that doesn't require privately-held search engines, SEO, and bots.

offhand, not digging deep, not played with, I think it's real...even cool. To my eyes, they are making a transportable, agnostic data layer -- context-level taxonomy, plus a bit. So people can *make* whatever they want, technology can *go* wherever it goes, and the data layer will still fold it in.

... the harder the killer rabbits are to keep from creeping around, the more certain I get that *this* is the killer rabbit we're contending with as we approach the problems. Which then makes me back up and think through the other parts of the frame again.

Bigger: the economy says GDP is good, metrics are fine, etc. But more and more people living their lives are suffering financially — hungry, unable to pay bills, homeless. The surface says the suffering is noise. But information integrity says there’s dissonance — it says “look again, harder.”
010
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
At the same time, that the information finds multivariate synergy helps us understand that what we’re perceiving is in sync with reality. We can check in that the whole makes sense — little practices of triangulation. Noise on the surface. Ways to check for information integrity underneath.

ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I think it’s noise, AND. Our perception has to constantly be tailored experientially or it’s overwhelming, just in walking around the world, before we ever get to encoded information. Information overload is only the beginning.

*I may be somewhat mangling the concept to try to make it more scannable. He has a term, I'm trying to find out if there's a subculture using it I'm not aware of, or if it would be a newish term in the gestalt. In other words, how much in front of meaning-making would it need to have.

another person I'm talking to nodded to the incredible uptick in data density per data point* as another area that makes what's happening in this medium unique. that data density *supports* the random access. thoughts? I think this would tie into your overall topology frame, but loosely?

You're lovely, from the link to the durr. 😄 Thank you. I have 'jump' on my brain. It's intuitive, relevant, expresses what is happening both in the tech and information. I hate it because it would be a net-new concept. I'm also now dealing with a Rolling Stones "Jumping Jack Flash" earworm.

which is network. which is the key concept embedded in 'web'. I still don't like 'web technology' as a substitute. everyone with a database without a website will be excluded in the gestalt, because we have so dialed in on what-is the web/internet. random access. thinking more.

the non-linearity, >3-d optionality of documentable information made the richness of our experience and world more findable, in abstract. Still not up to par with nature. But closer, with fewer externalized lifts, than we have with books. While also: I love the visualization books taught me.

All of it is for people. The artifact, model, form, conventions -- all of it, for people. These things ease the sharing. There's no reason for all of our information sharing if we remove people. There's no reason for money, computers, books, paintings, music, quipus, clay tablets. People are why.
010
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
So, yes, the artifact is important because it gets information from here to there, out of place and time. The conventions are useful because it sparks access, recognition, and orientation. The model/form are helpful in providing context, which tips over into nuance and meaning.

ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
As we're documenting, *most* of us are doing it to try to share what's worked for us with others. A few of us like to define what's what, or to tell the world what it can be. All the ways that we document, we're pulling folds of information from other aspects in.
110
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Information isn't a monopole, or binary, or simple. Its multivariate, pluralistic, fractal. We're continually shifting our memory access as we walk around the world: weights and priorities according to context, lens, point of view, experience, tools, time, documentation options, and so much more.
110
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
subtext is that this wasn't just one epiphany, but a multiplicity. Non-geo-located, >3 dimensional "findability", comparatively cheap (electron < paper), random access, stretchable constraints, increased structural complexity available, plurality of categories potential. "known" (but not) list 😄
100
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
I'm adding: people will make it make sense, but in a way that only works for them, with fewer opportunities to course-correct

ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
I appreciate this video. It syncs with so much of my thinking, while getting way more technical than my human-focused self. 😉 You brought up the biggest problems with using "intensional": * people don't know the word * it sounds like a word most people do know
110
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
I feel like you are using "form" intentionally, in a way I usually use "model". Is there a difference in your sense of form and model, and if so what is it?
110
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
As we wander around the world, we pick our path and use our experience to perceive (highlight) the parts we found to be useful. It takes the smallest mislogic to go from thinking that's a problem to solve, to building a surveillance system. Humanity has to come first.
010
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
I like to say that I'm trying to find how information is *functioning*, in and out of it's specific use case. That's when and how we can find the fuller aspect of what's happening with it.
110
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
yeah. Most of our IA in IT is about finding the things that most people can manage in -- which takes just a tiny skew to become "conform to". The more governed/strict/authoritarian, the more everyone else has to conform.
000
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
I think in the model I shared I'd put it as a sub of a sub of "Stored information troves", dependent on what form it took. Passport could be database (and they do exist on db's) or digital library. Argumentative essay is subbed under website, maybe by a few layers. **for this model**
000
ersatzGrace @ersatzgrace.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
In one of my models, I've formalized 'ghosts'. The key external part of the information is x. Most of the time, ancillaries are impacting other areas, so I 'ghost' them there and connect them. It also starts building an ersatz system, now in an information space where people already have interest.
