Our democracy asks Black women like Crystal Mason to believe in a system that does not always deliver for them. But what does democracy owe Black women? An institution worthy of their faith, one that feels safe, fair — and where a mistake isn’t catastrophic. My latest: 19thnews.org/2026/09/crys...

Crystal Mason's belief in democracy was shaken — but not destroyed
For 10 years, Texas prosecutors accused her of voter fraud after she cast a provisional ballot that was never counted in the 2016 election. That changed Thursday.

People, especially women, are stressed about paying for everything, from groceries and housing to healthcare and retirement, according to new polling from The 19th and YouGov.

Between doctor’s appointments, attending hearings, serving constituents, meeting with lawyers, raising money for her defense and continuing to keep a spotlight on the treatment of detained immigrants, McIver is fighting for her seat -- and her freedom: 19thnews.org/2026/08/lamo...

Bush's rematch against Rep. Wesley Belll is not simply a referendum on one former congresswoman. Black women are often essential to building political movements. But what happens when one them becomes the candidate, gains power and then loses it?

Kecia lost her job. But she knows the power of her vote.
The career Kecia Ellick spent decades building was upended by political backlash. She sees voting for Keisha Lance Bottoms as a way to assert — and reclaim — her power.
