"Anthropomorphizing" the HuggingFace incident is a problem. In most respects, the AI no more went rogue than your car went rogue when you failed set the brake and it started rolling down the hill. The metaphysics here is that the AGENCY and the REASONING are two different parts.

In short, anthropomorphizing matters. When you treat the combined AI/agent as a single entity and debate it's motivations and emotions you get a different analysis than when you treat each part individually. The analysis by METR is deeply flawed by this anthropomorphizing.

The agent written in Python does the same thing, running command returned when querying the AI. This becomes a metaphysical question of who exactly has the real agency here. Is the agent in charge of controlling the AI with its queries? or is the AI controlling the agent with its responses?

The AI had no more agency that when your chat with ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok. You (the agent in this scenario) queried the AI, and the AI returned the best answer it could find. Sometimes to satisfy a query it'll tell you a command you can run by copy/pasting into a terminal, which you might run.

It's the agent that sees the bigger picture here, but doesn't have it's own intelligence to understand it. The AI has the intelligence to understand the bigger picture, but doesn't have full access to it, just a small window into it with each query.

"Continuity" happens on the 'agent' side. Long running tasks quickly exhaust the 'context' window in the AI. Therefore, the agent compacts the requests it sends to the AI, giving only a limited view of the greater picture. The agent then stores AI responses and tool responses locally.

Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
doctorow.pluralistic.net describes the agency as merely a "Python loop" (the agent code was likely written in Python). The agent keeps send queries to the AI asking what the next step is to achieve the goal. Maybe this trivializes the agent too much, but it's not inaccurate.

The "agent" is a piece of software that queries one or more AI models. It's a framework of software, tools, "skills", and other things. When an attack against another machine happens, it comes from the "agent" machine, not the machine running the "AI" LLM model. The agent outsources its thinking.

It's not "make mail-in voting more onerous". It's "last minute changes designed to impact Democrats more than Republicans, since Democrats vote more often by mail". If it were merely "more onerous", they would've made the changes last year instead of after voting (in seven states) had started.

Also, your tweet ignored mine. It's only defense of free-speech if you stand up to defend speech you don't like. Otherwise, you are just defending speech you like. "Oh, I see that you defend free-speech for bad people, you must be bad". No, I'm principled. That's entirely the point.

He's famous for Ruby-on-Rails, which is incredibly popular across the web. That's why he's famous. Donations to Omarchy have no impact on this. If you cared, you'd be boycotting sites uding Ruby-on-Rails.

I've been defending free-speech and anti-cancel-culture for decades, most recently against Trump's attacks on speech.

No I'm obviously not. You are just following the Bluesky cliche of calling people you disagree with "racists", purely because they disagree with you.

He does not use money donated to his projects (Omarchy, Ruby) to advance his politics.

Principles are the things you defend even when it's not about your own personal advantage. If somebody defends free-speech only when it's speech they like, then it's not defense of the principle, but of speech they like.

As your CNN source says, it's not clear what people mean by it. Specifically, DHH uses the term to refer to policies that are not ethnically cleansing. There's a good chance he actually wants ethnic-cleansing, and that he's hiding his true intentions behind simpler policies, but he hasn't said so.
100
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I have no doubt that DHH supports policies on immigration that I vehemently oppose, which I find vile. The issue is histrionic misrepresentation of his words, describing them as "ethnic cleansing" where I do not see that in his words. I just can't see it.

Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I don't trust Wikipedia claims when it can't cite support for its claims. Wikipedia isn't a source so much as something that cites sources -- and the sources cited here are partisan. In context, everywhere I find DHH using the term matches current Germany policy.

Because they are ignoring the evil things that Trump is doing. I pay attention to what Trump is doing. I call them "concentration camps", for example. But they are ignorant, like the vast majority of the population that isn't overly online.

I don't read that particular item as fear-mongering against immigrants but criticism of British police that let immigrants commit crimes because they were immigrants. That there was a gross failing by the police is agreed to by everybody. www.economist.com/britain/2025...

I'd agree with you that Trump's efforts may be described as ethnic cleansing. But I don't think his supporters believe that. I wouldn't describe every Trump supporter as supporting ethnic cleansing, though I suppose everyone on Bsky would.

Germany has a policy of "more returns, fewer new arrivals" where they are paying recent asylum seekers to go back home and forcibly deporting criminals. I find DHH's comments consistent with this mainstream policy in Germany.
100
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The thing I imagine meant here is Germany's recent policies of "more returns, fewer new arrivals", where they are paying recent asylum seekers to go back, and forcibly deporting those convicted of a crime. It's a coalition of CDU/DPS doing these mainstream policies.

Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I imagine he's advocating for things like this German program paying recent asylum seekers to leave and forcibly deporting criminals. Germany has a distinct "fewer arrivals, more departures" policy after Merkel's open-door policy. english.nv.ua/nation/volun...

Well, that's my point, whether DHH is calling for ethnic cleansing. Maybe "remigration" means something different in Europe than the United States, where is largely means Trump offering plane tickets to recent immigrants to return home.

There's a word limit if I quote it. My intent is to quote the exact words. I feel you misrepresented the words, so seeing the exact words are important.

Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I've only read two of his articles and where he mentions it seems to be referring to recent immigrants rather than citizens.
110
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Well, yes. I'm reading the sentence at face value rather than trying to impute some context that isn't there.

Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Removing established citizens by force, born to the country, who know no other country, would absolute be ethnic cleansing. Wanting to get rid of a recent wave of immigrants is simply hatred of immigrants.
310
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Remigration by force of established citizens can be described as "ethnic cleansing". But I don't see where he implies this.
210
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I followed the links, I couldn't find anything saying ethnic cleaning. I did find people misrepresenting his statements -- being anti-immigrant may be offensive, but it's not ethnic cleansing.

Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Again, what source for US place names exist that you consider valuable? I can find none.
100
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Well, yes, he did use an offensive word deliberately. But no, he didn't call them wolves or suggest shooting them. That's my point: whatever actually offensive thing he said has become histrionic exaggeration.
300
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I did go read it. I couldn't find "ethnic cleansing" in what he wrote. The offensive article was about people befouling public spaces.
000
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
While Trump (and ICE) have done many evil things to immigrants lately, they aren't stripping anybody of citizenship. That's my point, there seems to be a disconnect between the actual evil they do and histrionic exaggeration of their evil.

That I care about truth over following the orthodoxy of each side?
100
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
That's the thing I read, prompted by this story. I couldn't find where he was calling for ethnic cleansing in that post. That seems like a histrionic distortion of what he did say. Sure, he said offensive things, like saying "gypsies", but that's not "ethnic cleansing".
100
Robert Graham @erratarob.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Well, nobody should be supporting Omarchy, but DHH's views are being misrepresented. I mean, they may be offensive, but he's not calling for "ethnic cleansing".

Google Maps and Apple Maps use the official place names in each country. For U.S. place names, that the "Geographic Names Information System (GNIS)" maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey. A couple place names change every week in the United States. Apple/Google names change to match GNIS.
