So many people rush out looking for a baby Birkin—brand-new, no story, straight from the boutique. Meanwhile, there are so many good ones ALREADY here, just waiting to be loved. Adopt, don’t shop. She came with papers, obviously. They’re called receipts.

Does everyone have that friend who spends too much time on Poshmark and talks about luxury goods the way people talk about rescue animals? I adopted this pre-loved Birkin. Her owner got knocked up and had to sell her. But she’s in her forever home now.

Once that principle is accepted, it will not remain confined to Ukraine. Any country or individual could be blamed for market consequences of defense, regardless of who started it. This is wildly out of step with the will of a nation that so fiercely protects the right to self-defense. 8/8

Russia attacked Ukraine. Russia uses petroleum revenue and infrastructure to finance and sustain that war. If an aggressor can make other countries dependent on its exports, this logic effectively converted foreign consumers into a shield for its war-sustaining infrastructure. 7/8

High crude prices, refinery outages, shipping constraints, sanctions, low inventories, and disruptions far beyond Russia all factor into this. Blaming Ukraine for the economic consequences of defending itself is a dangerous precedent. 6/8

Ukraine does not set diesel prices, and the United States cannot control events in the Strait of Hormuz. Ukrainian strikes have cut some Russian refining capacity, but today’s prices reflect a wider global shortage. 5/8

E. Rosalie @erosalie.infoepi.com · 09/10/2026
Russian imports *might* provide short-term relief but at a price that is too high. Relying on an adversary’s energy infrastructure creates a vulnerability that can be weaponized against both the United States and Ukraine. You do not ever do this. Freedom and security are too valuable. 4/8
173 7
E. Rosalie @erosalie.infoepi.com · 09/10/2026
This creates a foreseeable point of leverage. Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries can now be characterized as threatening a source of American fuel. The United States would now have a reason to oppose the strikes and could marginally blame Ukraine for higher diesel prices. 3/8

Until today, the United States prohibited imports of Russian-origin diesel under Executive Order 14066. OFAC has now issued a six-month exemption expressly authorizing those imports. 2/8

Today’s exemption for Russian diesel has dangerous implications for the legitimacy of self-defense. Even if it did work, it risks U.S. national security by creating a dependency that Russia can exploit. 1/8

It may well radicalize people. There are no countries that currently broadcast executions live, publicly. Iran, North Korea, and Afghanistan are the only countries that hold public executions today.

A death by firing squad may well encourage people who are radicalized, not deter them. Such a highly publicized death implies a movement is powerful and worthy of attention. It’s the same mistake the US made after 9/11. This is not speculative. Does death in a fireball deter suicide bombers?

Why do so many people talk as if society has only three possible endpoints—Christian nationalism, Islamic fundamentalism, or communism? That’s a false trilemma, and we don’t have to play along. Society isn’t locked onto a predetermined track. We can build it around what we actually want.

People can complain and argue for this policy or that, but the fact is: people want to have families. We're not a country that's serious about making that an option people can easily choose in their 20s or even 30s. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/08/... 3/3
