If any of you on here are thinking of being at the Pacific next year let me know! You can hear me talk about how it is that some people can sincerely believe they’re addicted to porn when they’re not actually addicted lol

they don't let you just say "yeah I didn't understand that part" in footnotes anymore and we're worse off for it

something about being rich and famous for too long makes people start reasoning like pre-socratic philosophers and I think that's beautiful

Also comes out in how we have a not like other girls schtick relative to the humanities in particular! You often see us positioning ourselves as more STEM-y and rigorous than other humanities. There are many layers I suppose

Don’t have anything super insightful but I think it comes out during faculty orientation type things. In the way we tend to reject a lot of the structures and best practices ppl from other disciplines seem relatively happier to take on, often because we feel our class/field is Built Different lol

Anytime I’m at an interdisciplinary faculty function I’m struck with how philosophy is kinda the Not Like Other Girls of academic disciplines

yeah this seems right! the tricky thing is that I would actually be annoyed if someone managed to get my initial idea into peer reviewed print before I did, but I suppose that's one point against doing this in the first place lol
110
Amanda @ermandyy.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
And I suppose it's also worth double checking that journals would, indeed, consider it a new idea if it hadn't yet appeared in a peer-reviewed venue. Right?? I don't want to scoop myself either lol

Amanda @ermandyy.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Self-reference in an anon. manuscript is always awkward, but here it would feel like I'd need to say something in case the reviewer were to google the key phrase and be led to think I'm, like, plagiarizing my own idea.

Amanda @ermandyy.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Does anyone know what the norms are if one were to publish a public philosophy piece on an idea before actually writing a peer-reviewed journal article on the topic? Would you mention in the manuscript that you had first coined a certain term or idea in a public venue?

amazing that LLMs are (apparently) so bad at generating reliable reference lists when that's, like, the one part of paper writing that I wish a robot could do for me!! (yes I know zotero exists but the juice just doesn't seem worth the squeeze when I've tried to dabble in it)

one thing that sucks is that there are so few highly regarded journals in empirical phil mind-adjacent fields that I can't afford to tell [redacted] journal that I never want to referee for them again because of how shitty they've treated me as an author. only in my dreams!!

Unimportant, but: Does TAH think all highlighters are referred to as yellow highlighters regardless of color? Or do these dorks he's envisioning have six different shades of yellow in their highlighter collection?

The APA's paper categories for submission are so rough... does philosophy of psychiatry fall under philosophy of science --> philosophy of cognitive science more than it does phil mind? Even if I approach phil of psychiatry from a kind of mind-y perspective?

Amanda @ermandyy.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
of course this sort of bad behavior is indirectly encouraged by a system where your best paper can be held captive by JPhil or whatever for 1.5 years while you're on the market! it's risky and bad behavior but at a certain point I can't really blame people for playing an already corrupt system

Amanda @ermandyy.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I think the risks for someone in a sufficiently populated subfield (w/ low likelihood of reviewer overlap) are prob outweighed by the benefits for a cynically-minded job candidate or early career person tbh. I wouldn't anyway and my subfields are pretty teeny, but I'm sure people do!

anyone have suggestions for good/recent work on what it would take/mean for AI to be conscious for an undergrad phil mind course? cards on the table, I'm mainly hoping to find an accessible but serious piece that can disabuse them of the notion that current LLMs are or will be conscious lol

Has anyone written about anorexic dog whistles? If not I'm worried I'm gonna have to be the one to do it... online discourse in formerly ED'd circles with the current Ariana Situation has brought up some really interesting things from an epistemic and normative perspective!

Been a while since I planned to submit something to an APA conference. Anyone have a sense of how much they let you abuse the footnote word count exclusion loophole? Asking for a friend whose straightforward paper is becoming increasingly non-straightforward...

I’ve said this before, but the issue with imposter syndrome is not that there’s chronic under confidence at large, it’s that it’s not optimally distributed

A lot of jerks will smugly ask undergraduate philosophy majors ‘what are you gonna do with that?’ and it can be hard to know how to respond. One option, though, is ‘dress up marketing for AI firms as profound philosophy ahead of their IPOs’

I'm sorry, but it's just completely false that analytic philosophy (of all places!) has a norm that we shouldn't call each other names. Maybe we should have that norm. But we are, very famously, the one field that doesn't have that norm

Genuine Q: Have we given up the fight on em dashes? I'm seeing more people saying they're just giving up on them altogether, but I legit don't know if I can manage that. Will I trigger reviewer alarms at this point if I continue to use them? Why couldn't LLMs have taken the semicolon instead ughh

Although I didn’t know of it when I was writing this, this paper also addresses Jennifer Radden’s recent critique of my sense of agency piece. She takes AN self-control measures to be evidence against my view, when this is actually quite the opposite! (authors.wiley.com/dashboard/jo...)

In this piece I argue that anorexia and addiction are two sides of the same coin in a way that can only be recognized once we strip away their divergent phenomenological profiles. It's part of a broader effort of mine to poke holes in the trustworthiness of agential phenomenology.

There’s an argument to be made that it is, in some sense, unethical to buy tickets to see Ariana Grande perform in the current state she’s in. I don’t feel like fleshing out the whole thing rn, but it may be on par with (indirectly) enabling an addict to get their fix of choice.

yeah this is fair, but then you still run into the same issue of peer institutions having pretty varied approaches to grade inflation. Ideally employers, admissions, committees, etc., would have a detailed sense of which schools took which approach, but I imagine that doesn't always happen!

Amanda @ermandyy.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
lot of this also stems from the societal fantasy that we can directly compare getting an A in an identically titled class at Place X and Place Y. As someone who's taught at a range of institutions, most of us are scaling the intensity of our coursework up or down depending on the student population!

I know someone writing a hit piece on one of my papers is a good sign (means people are reading my work!), but, ngl, it does feel kinda weird that the first time for it to happen is by a senior (emerita!) person in my subfield. Do you know you're dunking on something I wrote in grad school lol
