Pamphlets played a significant role in the sentencing of the Prairieland Detention Centre protestors – punished with 30-100 years in prison. It’s a telling case of the power of radical social expression. Read today's blog post by @erinrouton.bsky.social ⤵️ blogs.law.ox.ac.uk/border-crimi...

OUT TODAY, the AAUP just released the first comprehensive account of how the Trump administration has taken the same playbook it's used on law firms & foreign governments & turned it on American universities. US higher ed has, in effect, become a target of a massive extortion racket. 🧵

Share and tell CBS to air this! Sharyn Alfonsi, the veteran “60 Minutes” correspondent who reported a segment about migrants sent to the El Salvadoran torture prison CECOT, just sent a blistering letter to colleagues, sounding the alarm that Bari Weiss spiked the story for political reasons.

Our top story: “Border enforcement, and in particular the construction of detention facilities ... is big business. It’s a huge business. It’s incredibly lucrative for a very small number of people who have every incentive to make this system as big and as bloated as possible.”

*️⃣*️⃣*️⃣ AE FORUM (52.1): I Was Wrong *️⃣*️⃣*️⃣ A Vicarious Scar: Secondary trauma and ethnographic care in fieldwork by Erin Routon @erinrouton.bsky.social #anthrosky Find it here: ⬇️ americanethnologist.org/journal/issu...
ABSTRACT: Difficult challenges are an unavoidable aspect of doing ethnographic fieldwork in sensitive spaces or on sensitive subjects. A less commonly discussed problem, however, is the impact that vicarious or secondary traumas can have on researchers. Here, I discuss my experience of secondary trauma in conducting research with legal advocates in family-detention facilities in the US. Even in work in which trauma is centered, I show, the traumatic “wounds” of fieldwork can go unidentified, to the researcher's own detriment. I echo calls for our discipline to better recognize how ethnographers experience trauma, which results in part from continued disciplinary norms, and to reconsider our work as care. Additionally, I call for further attention to the more complex psycho/somatic traumas that can result from field research.
