I think this is the most vibrant pot of rotkohl I’ve ever made.
A pot of cooked red cabbage. The colour is a vibrant reddish purple that has stained the wooden spoon used to stir it.

I thought this was going to be a Wile E. Coyote situation, but these caterpillars later moved along to more stable terrain to continue their meal.
Two milkweed tussock caterpillars on either side of a milkweed leaf rib, the rest of the leaf is long gone. The rib hangs precariously as if it were about to fall and the caterpillars with it. But upon checking later, both caterpillars had moved along to more stable and (I’m sure to them) delicious terrain.

The ducklings came to visit! Mama/auntie merganser keeps bringing different numbers of babies - sometimes more, then less, then more again. So I think there’s a crèche nearby. Later they completely passed out in this spot, snoozing in the sun.
A female common merganser with 4 ducklings standing on a river well. Large, sleek diving duck. Female is gray overall with red-brown, crested head and neck, white chin, dull white upper breast and belly, and orange bill. Ducklings have same colour palette as the female but fuzzier and with white spots on the upper parts.

Robins are almost ready to fledge. I thought this one was going to go for sure, but it changed its mind. Sometimes we need a few tries before we take big steps.

Had a painted turtle lay her eggs in our driveway! Our local turtle conservation folks came and excavated the nest. 3 eggs have gone to their facility for safe hatching.

This was a such a charming read. I wanted to read the book before watching the movie. Sweet, funny, and smart.

The hatchening has begun. Mama robin feeds the wee hatchling in the nest while papa looks on.

There comes a point during nesting where papa robin starts to bring food items to the nest and mama robin will take them in lieu of the not-yet-hatchedlings feeding. It’s a bit of a practice/bonding thing. The first few times he doesn’t quite know what to do. He’ll get the hang of it though.

Papa robin guards the nest while mama robin is busy vanquishing her arch enemy - her reflection in the kitchen window. She returns victorious. I have now put sticky notes all over the window to try and break up the reflection.

POV you bought your husband a stuffy to make him feel better last week, and he loans it to you to make you feel better this week.

River spelunking today now that the water is low. Found the remains of Penelope the deer. Discovered Sink Archipelago. Many cool rocks and trees were encountered. Soakers were got.
Cool rock formation along the shore. It has dark and light swirls in it.A very old sink stuck in part of an island. A tree with a hole eroded under it forming what looks like should be a perfect burrow for something. All that remains of Penelope the deer. An almost full skeletal deer leg.

A totally not haunted tree. Nope, not haunted at all.
Two yellow birches growing together with an exposed root ball. The exposed root gives the appearance of a ghostly visage if you use your imagination.

The river by my place is really moving. The chunk of woods around the corner and down the hill is, as annual custom dictates, a part of the river now.

Highly recommend. Every word the right word and in the right place. Characters you can get attached to. Pacing brisk but not rushed. Really enjoyed it.

Haven’t done one of these in a bit. The doe is inspired by one that had been hanging around the house recently. She was injured and had a limp, but was still doing deer things. Unfortunately we think she got predated sometime in the night. But she left an impression while she was here.

Today has been punctuated by trees breaking and crashing to the ground. My yard looks like a poorly run logging operation.

Raccoon fishing for some grub in the river. Must be good food to be worth the chilly water.
Common raccoon standing in a frozen stream, hands cradling something (not sure what) it just caught to eat.
