Do you ever read a bestseller and think, "This isn't doing it for me?" I try to keep up with hot titles in middle grade, and IMPOSSIBLE CREATURES by Katherine Rundell had all the hype you could want. And I agree it has all the ingredients for excellence...but it felt undercooked. Is it just me?

I feel like my mind is being unspooled and respooled in a better way as I read If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland. Remember how writing felt when you were about thirteen years old and it just poured out of you without any overthinking? This book is about regaining access to that.

Your book query's elevator pitch needs to make an agent say, "I know which editors need this manuscript." It needs to make the editor say, "Our sales reps are going to be excited to pitch this." It needs to make the sales reps say, "I know which stores will see this fly off the shelves." #author
