Fighting Games and MTG have the exact same combo problem lol. Your ability to execute longer combos than an opponent is it similar advantage to having better cards. Juggling for 79% hp in an FG and combining off in Magic are equally boring for the other player.

It's tempting to blame content creators but no way, Halo 5's story was awful on a level that's difficult to describe. The culture vultures rarely are able to sway opinion, but basically nobody liked Halo 5. A new thing can be bad entirely on it's own independent from nostalgia for the old thing.

I always got the impression that the reason people could ask the computer to do a bunch of different things in Star Trek was because there's just a lot of bespoke programming for many different functions. That's certainly possible today but sadly no company has ever bothered to actually do it.
