Good point. This was thirty years ago far from care but yes, good point.

Ok maybe it’s different if you live in a 100 year-old farmhouse in the Owyhees versus an apartment in Indianapolis or whatever. But it sure would have been a lot of long trips to Boise or Elko every time a bat got in the house. And the drive riskier than the bat, I would think.

Maybe so. Still, that’s a half dozen unnecessary, expensive, and painful medical interventions I and many friends evaded over the years. And I am betting I noticed the bats maybe ten percent of the times they were present. So nah, just waking up near a bat is not going to send me to the doc.

Good lord I’ve woken up in a room with a bat at least a half-dozen times in my life that I knew about, likely many more that I did not. Very glad I never had the acculturation to seek medical help afterward. It’s very common in old houses where upstairs windows are left open at night in the summer.

Yeah fuck that apology. I want to know what they were aiming for here if I’m ever to encounter their products without recoiling the way I do when I see a cybertruck. I need more information to determine if this is even forgivable because without more, it isn’t.

Touché! I haven’t forgotten about Glass. I miss reading those articles in tiny print on that oddly-bright, oddly-thin paper of the old magazine, and believing them to be true.

For crying out loud, she thinks—and TNR let her say it—that Augustus commissioned the Aeneid. The second sentence in the article contains historical nonsense. The remainder is dreck. How does this stuff get published?

Little radio Rwanda playing in the background, calling you constantly, persistent and lethal.

Wtf Augustus did not commission the Aeneid is this some kind of super sophisticated joke or something.

Yesterday I needed an Uber because I was 4 miles from home, it was the hottest day of the year, and my public transit was not working. But my phone battery was low and I remembered that Lyft/Uber both charge more when their software detects a low battery so I was like fuck that and I walked home.

Nice! I don’t have a case for mine, but I too still use floppies regularly. Just bought a new box in fact. Got a system that works for me and never had any reason to change it.

Me either. A Jewish friend ribbed me with it just recently. However, we are both old and out of touch.

I’m really sorry to hear this. I live in Detroit and let me tell you, our branch libraries are killing it with Black writers from brand-new graphic novels to academic histories and it’s incredible to see.

Speaking as a clumsy cat-stepper-oner, this is really true and has fascinated me forever! Every cat I have had is quick to accept an apology and move on. These creatures have complex inner lives!

140 pages into Henry James’s The Awkward Age and we’ve finally left the drawing room—for a quiet bench on a forested path. How a book this boring can be this interesting is totally beyond me. I have to read every chapter twice to piece together the meaning. It’s excruciating. And TOTALLY WORTH IT.

The giant stack of cartons of cage-free eggs behind the $2.99 sign? They cost $8.49.

Same! I had a little HP laser jet in the mid nineties that I ran many thousands of pages through without a hitch. A solid decade of heavy use. Died when I dropped it on concrete. I’d pay very good money for another one.

I have tracked down authors (usually academics) and written to others in care of their publishers, and it generally works well! But I’m also really old and this practice may have died out in the world by now.

Be mad at the dumbasses who didn’t do the review properly and the dipshits who challenged a good project. Don’t attack environmental reviews for requiring accurate baseline info.
000
Erik Ryberg @erikryberg.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
I agree they should have overlooked this but the desire to ensure that baseline environmental effects are measured from existing, not previous, uses is a noble one.

Discovered it at random many years ago! I loved how the Swedes were the detested, filthy immigrants (my own people) by the upstanding locals. Good subject for holidays with the pro-deportation folks. I read a few of his others, ok but not the same.

My house in Tucson had a covenant that said it could not be sold to a “descendant of the African race” or some weird shit. My realtor assured me it was unconstitutional and my neighbors were Black but it felt creepy as hell and I never felt good about not getting it taken off the deed somehow.

As a life-long book fanatic and a huge supporter of actually owning the books that are meaningful to you, I have experienced these fairs both as a child and as a parent and they are utterly dispiriting and I loathe them.

I was watching Magnus Carlsen puzzle over a tricky position and I said aloud “any reason not to take that pawn?” and at that moment he took the pawn and I was so proud. Then immediately his face fell and he said “Oh wow that was really stupid” and he spent the rest of the game complaining about it.

I’m sure many have made this observation but it is astonishing how much damage Amazon has done to their formerly useful music player and the whole Amazon Music ecosystem. It’s practically unusable for me now without a subscription, in fact it’s so poor I wonder if it would work even if I had one.

I was using shorthand. Baby boomer women (like Heather Cox Richardson) are among the least sought after demographic cohort by advertisers. They aren’t celebrated by advertising-driven culture or catered to by it. You can draw your own conclusions but I suspect it’s because they don’t fall for it.

It’s also because older women don’t buy shit. They’re over it in ways everyone else isn’t.
